Best and Worst Transfers

Well what do ye think were the most influential and most useless transfers in the last few years?

I reckon the Anelka transfer to Man. City was a greta buy for them. Then there's Fowler. I think the two could do great job there.

As for the worst, well most of GH's buys at Liverpool apart from Dudek, Kirkland and Diouf have not been very successfull so they'd have to go in there as bad ones. Then Karel Poborsky's move to Utd turned out to be a disaster as well.

Arsene wenger buying a substitute winger ( Henry ) and turning him inot one of the best strikers in the world was a pretty good signing. Wenger has made quite a few inspirational signings in the last few years, as Fergie did in the early 90's with Schmeicel Keane and Cantona. As for the worst signings, it is not a player signing but I think Sunderland sacking Peter Reid to hire Howard Wilkinson was one of the daftest things I have seen in football, and I am not basing that on hindsight I said it at the time.

    The best buy ever.
    Shearer from Southampton 3.3 million.

(He scored bags of goals, won Blackburn the league, the only player in English football to have scored 30 or more goals in three consecutive seasons.)
Blackburn then sold him on for 15 million. Not a bad investment.

    The worst buy ever
Rafael Felipe Scheidt (Signed by Celtic manager John Barnes from Gremio for £4.8m )
    Say no more!

You can hardly class that as a bad buy!
Perhaps unlucky would be a better description?

WTF? Rio? I can't see why he wasn't worth the money. This has been one of our best defensive seasons for a while. So he has done something right with the help of Sheasy and Wes.

Gianluigi Lentini from AC Milan to Torino in 1992 for $21.5 million has to be one of the worst ever. It was a world record tranfer fee at the time. He only made 63 appearances in four seasons for Milan before moving on to Atalanta and then back to Torino.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,346 ✭✭✭✭KdjaCL

Denilson has repaid that cash and Lentini was injured in a car crash which cost him nearly 3 years of his career hence the low sell on fee i seen him last year (i think) playing for Torino and he looked very good.
Also lentini was bought at the height of the "3 player rule" and the Dutch forwards at Milan were getting on a bit so at the time it was seen as a good investment as he was an italian.

That still doesnt really excuse him from being a bad transfer. He still only made 63 apps in 4 years, which is hardly a good return for $21 million

As regards the worst, take your pick of Houllier's. I think Jonatnan Woodgate might be the final piece of the Newcastle jigsaw to turn them into a solid top 3 proposition. But life after Shearer?

Mendieta - 30+M to some Italian team.

Rio is bad business as those sort of transfers will rarely bee seen again and Leeds made 12M in 12 months. Surely Fergie could have got him for 25M. I don't think he's much use either, Keano showed him up the other night.

O'Shea will also become a better player than him imo.

O Shea will probably become a better player, but he'll learn a lot from Rio. And I don't think Keane has showed anyone up at CB. not yet anyway.

Mendieta signed for Lazio from Valencia in 2001 which didnt work out too well for him. When he was with Valencia he was easily one of the best midfielders in Europe. He's on loan at Barca and is having a mare of a time there.

Then again Rio hasn't played alot during the period that Utd went well. Personally I think 30 million is too much for any player and TBH Rio hasn't been very consistant this season. He's been injured alot and when Keano played with im the other night he looked good because Keane took care of everything;)

I agree with Mendiata moving was a bad idea, especailly for him. He was very impressive at Valencia.
