a long post but tell your friend anyway...

I'd bet that everybody heard about the latest "big brother" scandal in Britan. We've all been aware for some time that both the NSA and GCHQ moniter every email in the world for key words such as cocaine, bomb, nuclear, etc. If any keywords are found, these emails are set aside to be read later. In britan they are expanding their operations at GCHQ so that they can read every email sent or recieved in britan. They can even break into your inbox and obtain your passwords without a court order.

This means that every email your company sends to a british firm could be read and leave you vulnerable to dis-honest employees, more blunders like the MI5 laptop fiasco and the sort of corruption taken for granted in the british goverment.

I think too much is enough and it's time we told big brother to **** off.

What possible reason could they have for reading our email? How is my email to Mick asking when he's going to lunch of vital improtance to GCHQ and NSA?

Not only that, but these are foreign secuirity agencies, working on behalf of foreign goverments. They are breaking international law and local law to invade your privacy. If there's any british of americans reading please tell your screwy goverment to get bent.

The reason they give us is that they are tring to catch criminals. Give me a break. Any terrorist worth his salt will make use of encryption freely available on the web, so it can't be them they're after. They might be able to use it against small-time criminals but I can't see the NSA and GCHQ worrying about burgulars, football hooligans and small-time drug dealers, can you?

The simple fact is big brother is watching YOU. Why, I have no idea. I don't want to sound like I watch too much XFiles but you can bet it's not for our benefit. What exactly do they want?

Well if they want to read my email. I'll make them read EVERY ****ING EMAIL I SEND. From now on EVERY email I send will have keywords in it. From now on I will FORCE them to read what time Mick is going to lunch, when IAR practice and how much progress I've made in my SMAC PBEM.

You want to read my email big brother? I'LL RAM IT DOWN YOUR ****ING THROAT.

And another stupid thing, is that any decent terrorist will use codewords for certain things.
Keywords are a waste of time unless it's found in a certain context.
eg - "That's da' ****in' BOMB homey!"
eg - "How many BOMBS you want Mr.Hussane?"

It's not new, they have been doing it for years.

Kind of true, it's archived to read later but it wouldn't reallly be read unless they had a reason to investigate you.

    Again very old news.

This means that every email your company sends to a british firm could be read and leave you vulnerable

I think it's more every email that routes through England will be scanned.
to dis-honest employees, more blunders like the MI5 laptop fiasco and the sort of corruption taken for granted in the british goverment.

Dishonest employees are the least of your worries considering France and Canada and a couple of other places are sueing USA+England because No Such Agency passed on business secrets to thier countries businesses.

What possible reason could they have for reading our email? How is my email to Mick asking when he's going to lunch of vital improtance to GCHQ and NSA?

If Mick is an international terrorist and Lunch is a code word to go active it would mean a lot of sense.

Not only that, but these are foreign secuirity agencies, working on behalf of foreign goverments. They are breaking international law and local law to invade your privacy.

Not really true. It's more foreign agencies are working on behalf of your country. It's a well known fact that it is illegal in a lot of countries for the goverment to spy on it's citizens so they share information with other countries. So for example NSA would hand over information England couldn't get by spying in England, and MIwhatever did the reverse.
If there's any british of americans reading please tell your screwy goverment to get bent.

Actually everyone is doing it to some extent.

The reason they give us is that they are tring to catch criminals. Give me a break. Any terrorist worth his salt will make use of encryption freely available on the web, so it can't be them they're after.

Information is power. Encryption software isn't always used. Anyway there is cross reference spying. For example Mick the terrorist may be very careful about sending messages but his girlfriend might not be.
They might be able to use it against small-time criminals but I can't see the NSA and GCHQ worrying about burgulars, football hooligans and small-time drug dealers, can you?

It's all information. Again cross reference spying would help here.

The simple fact is big brother is watching YOU. Why, I have no idea. I don't want to sound like I watch too much XFiles but you can bet it's not for our benefit. What exactly do they want?

BIG BROTHER has been spying for YEARS! I mean England were caught out some time back over the Enigma machine. When they decoded it they didn't tell anyone many years afterwards and sold the machine as an encryption device to the commonwealth countries just so they could spy on the messages.

Again this is old news. smile.gif It was already written on Slashdot that NSA is drowning in spam because of this. smile.gif

Interesting topic, (it would be given the name really wink.gif. I've heard a few similar stories particularly the one about the encrypted phones given to Ireland by the British (contrary to my name I am not nationalistic, my wife was born in Britain) which turned out to be not so secure and MI5 or one of those TLAs had a good listen on all secure communications (so why couldn't they have told us about Haughey? grr)

The other interesting one is on Tempest, which is the radio interference given off by computer VDUs (sheesh old terminology, monitors) which allow someone with suitable equipement to descramble this into useful screens from outside the building.

Microsoft (how did you know they were going to get involved) were investigating putting symbols on the screens of their apps which could be detected from outside of businesses for illegal use of their apps (it's that revolving e-planet I tell ya) beats me why they bother, just look for the blue screen of death and listen for the screams of anguish, it's always a giveaway.

Anyone know if thats how the TV detector vans work (or is it just a guy sitting inside a transit with a tv aerial shouting "BEEP" at the top of his voice?)

So, in the spirit of things, "the plot to assasinate the president of the USA has been
    cancelled due to bad weather"

Ahhh, gives you that warm feeling... oh hang on theres someone at the door, damn I forgot the Tempest screens, they're already onto me, remember me....

    False alarm, just the milkman.

Lads and ladies, I couldn't give a fiddlers if someone from MI5, MI6, CIA, IRA, or whatever is reading my mail. If they really wanna try and figure out my private life, that's for them to decide smile.gif

    <mad bit>
BOMB, C4 PLASTIQUE, ASSASSINATION, AND OTHER NASTY THINGS!!!

    Anyway, back to work...

    no honestly - Mick's a nice fella smile.gif

That VDU thing - I heard that if you're close enough all you have to do is tune a telly to the right frequency and you can see what's on the VDU

Another thing is the keyboard - they can use ultra-sensitive detectors to detect the keystoke and tell what key your pressing. That's y if I ever get off my ass and program my own encryption application it's going to have a clickable keyb on the screen.
