Web2ftp.com Down...Any alternatives??

    As I'm behind a firewall in UCD, i've always used Web2ftp.com for doing some quick editing and uploading if and when needed, but the site has been down for the last week:(

    Anyone know any other sites that offer a free service like they do/did or any alternative method to uploading to your server from behind a firewall??

    Danke
    David

    I use it for the same purpose myself. Am able to get around it by installing an FTP client on Citrix here though (NCI).

    Haven't been able to find another similiar service. I remember one but it didn't use SSL.

    Hi Niall,

    That wont work unfortunatley-
    Although it uses a Java Applet in the "Webpage", they connect to server through Port 21, which is Blocked in UCD and Most of the Colleges afaik.

    The Web2ftp allowed us to use the http proxy to access the server.

    Thanks all the same:)

    Just wondering whether there is a Perl or CGI Script that would do this?

    Only thing I can think of now is netsoc. SSH into their machine, and afaik you can then FTP to external sites.

    They may have an FTP proxy too, but I'n not sure :)

    Maybe I should rephrase the thread...

    Does anyone have a generic log in to lend me to get into netsoc?

    That looks like the only solution Otherwise I'm back to square one :(

    oh well, - perhaps http://www.catbase.com/networkz/ then...

    seems strange that there's no real rival for Web2FTP ...

    Why not just join netsoc?

    Alternatively, there's plenty of CGI ftp stuff you could install if you're only uploading stuff to one FTP place.

    AFAIK, they only accept new members during freshers week.
    They may have changed that policy since they dont have the sole rights to all day net access as was the case, but if they still accept new members at this time of the year, they have my my sub!

    Do you know about this Seamus??

    By the way P, any links to a CGi script that will do this- i searched on Hotscripts but couldnt find anything.

    Twas free - great util, the zip upload tool was the best.

    Is the site gone for good or they just having probs? - i was getting errors logging in over the past few months,

    Im launching a similar tool by the end of next month (hopefully). It wont be free but it will be affordable.

    Yeah the zip upload and unpack feature was bang on.

    For anyone who wants to see the site, heres what it looked like courtesty of the Wayback machine...

    The only thing I can think of is to email someone in netsoc admin and ask them :)

    Maybe suggest that they set up their own Web2Ftp clone :)

    Thats odd alright- the site is back up, but its just reurning a 404 when you log in!? I suppose its positve that the frontpage is back up at least :)

    Seamus,
    Do you know if Netsoc accept new members this late in the year!?

    Ok heres another thought,

    What about putting something like the boards.ie file manager up on your server and then using a script such as that to access the folders!?
    http://members.boards.ie/cgi-bin/manager.cgi

    Is this easy to do?

    Could this be used to connects ala SOCKS 5.

    http://www.http-tunnel.com/HT_Products_HTTPTunnelClient.asp

    and then use smart ftp which is free for non comercial use.

    I've tried http-tunnel, and the free proxy works soooo sloooow.

    Not an option unless they start opening the Comp Labs all night!!

    These might help:
    Havn't used them myself, but have used that sort of thing in the past.

    Phewww....:)

    All seems to be back to normal, thank God.

    They are very interesting scripts P.
    Thanks.

    Ironically, the first one has a live demo, which I was able to use the same as web2ftp, so there is an instant alternative!

    The second one looks good too, cos it has a built in text editor for changng code v. quickly- The first one has this too but only available in the Pro Version. Neither has the Zip upload and unpack feature unfortunately.

    I'll try and install the 2nd one later today- I'd imagine though I'll have to change the htaccess on the directory because otherwise other people could use it, hence blasting my bandwidth quota for the month into oblivion!

    Thnaks to everyone and their suggestions :)

    Download net2ftp and install it on your server...

    http://net2ftp.com

    Then it will never be down :)

    You need PHP3+ and MySQL is optional

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,695 ✭✭✭b20uvkft6m5xwg

    Thanks for that [JcCM]Murderer

    Sorry for not replying to this- I saw it yesterday- Thats pretty much the solution!

    I downloaded the file and will install later-

    Thx for the info.

    BTW, the url should be www.net2ftp.com :)

    You also need the ftp functions installed as part of PHP. Use this bit of code to see if you have it.
if (function_exists('ftp_connect')) {
    echo "FTP functions are available.<br>\n";
    } else {
    echo "FTP functions are not available.<br>\n";
    }
My server doesn't which is a bit of a bitch.

    \o/ A solution has been discovered!

    Once again, the non-english section of the Internet thrust forth a useful site without ads, and very fast.

    http://wachtelnet.de/cgi-bin/ftp/ftp.pl/?bp=init

    Combined with a German - English Dictionary, it's very useful.

    Make mine a Budveiser thanks. :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,695 ✭✭✭b20uvkft6m5xwg

    Its not bad-

    The main thing is it has a zip and unpack feature- but I think they still have it capped a max 1mb file size although they seem to say the limit is 5mb [Dateigröße 5000kb]

    web2ftp is still playing up and is v. inconsistent but I'm using net2ftp on my own server now- and its great text editing of files - Unfortunaltely no zip and unpack :(

    Thanks for the link seamus - I have a list of backup services now to call on just in case!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,695 ✭✭✭b20uvkft6m5xwg

    Ahhahhh...

    There is an english language version...
    http://wachtelnet.de/cgi-bin/ftp/ftp.pl/?la=gb&mo=demo

    For some reason it automtically logs into the opera ftp server, but simply hit the logout button on the top right and you'll be back to the log in screen...ALL in English!!
