Chorus Powernet

Ive had this service for about 2 years now (cutting edge or what)
Its says its guaranteed 128/128 but it can vary up to 512/128
depending on traffic. This isnt exactly true as ive gotten
    download speeds of 600kB/s
Now me im what you would call an expensive bandwidth user
Ive downloaded about 5 gigs in the last 2 days 4 example

The connection is a wireless satellite connection
It suffers from lag from time to time (not often but enuf to ensure u cannot play games with any dependability)
They also say in the contract that if u exceed 3gigs a month then
they charge u per mb. I think its 5cent per mb not sure though

I normally pull about 50 gigs a month in downloads sometimes more
Ive never been charged more than the flat rate 55 euros
Just wondering if anyone here uses chorus and what their
    experience is.

PS i think they have now changed the name to cablenet or something

I'm with Chorus but it's the cable version. So far it's crap, ping to slow for games keep getting cut off and a lot of problems so far but it's early days yet and I am will to give them a chance as their tech support is not bad, you log a complaint and they call you back.

Its hard to believ that an Irish person posted this

I'd advise you to go for 256/128 DSL ....available in your area :D

I know that you will then pay around €54 (as now) for 4.0Gb a month but you will then have the luxury of knowing what the rest of humanity are talking about in here.

Baird i have powernet about as long as you do [must have been one of the first i kept pestering them as soon as i heard it existed] its still called powernet and now costs €100 per month for 1024/128kb [its actually the same speed as our 512/128k] cablenet is a different product avalible only in clonmel, thurlus and Kilkenny [its on trial] its €50 per month 512/128k no cap.Powernet is not satellite it uses MMDS technology have a look here this is the company that make them its the WBR231bi model,it is capable of doing 10mbit download and 2 mbit upload up to 30 miles using the spectrum of one tv channel [i think] the poor ping problem confuses me i seem to get better speed and better ping on english servers [mainly in londen] and if you do a trace route on ul.ie [i am in Limerick btw] the packets are sent to dublin, londen, amsterdam dublin galway limerick and then to UL. I understand the galway and dublin but why should it go outside of ireland [it does this every time] even when i ping another Powernet user it still takes this route.have a look at ]this report [the pings in the report are not usually this high]

i thought the only thing stopping them rolling it out in Cork etc., was that the cable infrastructure was too old, but you can get it over wireless, so what the ...?

money ....thats the problem chorus are broke i am surprised i have my powernet connection this long.those modems we are using cost a bomb, around €600 + cabling, antenna, support, reciever tower, bandwith the list goes on and on it is expensive to setup each reciever tower will service 120ish users [i think this is the figure a chorus tech quoted me] so thats €72,000 on modems alone it would cost them around €400,000 + to setup in cork [they would have to build a tower dont think they have one and any other MMDS provider wouldnt be happy with chorus moving in on its patch] so it is quite an expensive venture but it is a great product if they could only use it properly they would make a fortune

They have the towers in Cork already. Whether they keep their licence now is another issue.

Correct me if I'm wrong but their MMDS licence in the 2.5Ghz band is safe. It is their 3.5Ghz broadband licence that is jeprody.
