Removing programs when Add/Remove programs won't do it.

Can anybody recommend a way to remove unwanted programs that won't uninstall the usual way? I have a few programs on the add/remove list that I don't want/need anymore. Can anybody recommend a way to remove unwanted programs that won't uninstall the usual way?
I have a few programs on the add/remove list that I don't want/need anymore. When I try the usual windows uninstaller it gives an error that certain files or DLLs cannot be found.
Can I delete the programs from their directories? Do I need to edit the registry to remove all traces of them? If so, where in the registry should I look?

Windows washer 3000 i think is the name of an app thats free and will do it.
