Ring

    The bastards.

I loved Ring. It was amazing. It was original. There was no blood but still it was scary as hell - the girl coming out the sewer in the video was just one of those classic moments in horror. Plus there was the advantage that it wasn't rammed down our throats like Blair Witch was (and we know how overrated that was) - here was a foreign horror movie that received little to no coverage and hype in Western media, so to make the impact it did it was something pretty special.

    The bastards.

I heard Hollywood had got their greasy, money-grabbin paws on Ring. I refused to believe it. I thought they might have a tiny bit of decency left in their excuses for souls, and leave this classic alone.

    The bastards.

I just saw the trailer. The trailer for Ring. The Hollywood version.

    The bastards.

Enough said really. I won't even consider seeing this movie. Not even renting it. I'm not paying these twats for pillaging a truly original idea and a great movie and hijacking it to make easy money. I'm not rewarding them for taking one of the best horror movies I've ever seen and turning it into diluted, commercialised all-American corporate sh!te.

    Bastards.

(In case you can't tell, I'm a bit displeased about this)

there's a thread about the ring (american version) on the film board.

i've seen the jap version and it is really the only film that has ever truly freaked me out, I still get scared when I think about it late at night, specially if I'm alone in the house]]*shudder*

i am not looking forward to the american version either, but I am going to go see it.. just out of morbid curiosity

Every review I've seen has said that the american remake is just as scary and suspenseful as the original. I wouldn't dismiss it just yet. It's not exactly a 'remake' in the sense of Planet of the Apes - more just a translation. They don't have to try and come up with any new ways to scare the audience, just put a fancy sheen over the original, and make it more paletable for American audiences.

I started a thread on the origional ring which I decided to watch after many a recommendation from our good freinds on boards. Ir scared the fvcking shi*e out of me. That bit where she crawled out the TV... OMG

However I hear the US version is pretty good - not as good as the origional - but good. Empire gave it 4/5 but said to remove a star for anyone who had seen the origional.

Umm, how exactly would i go about getting my hands on the original version? I've heard tons about it but have never seen it yet.

Buy it from play.com, or check out your local chartbusters (I rented it about a year ago).

If you have FilmFour, they are showing it a few times over the next month (along with Ring 2), and Sky Movies are showing Ring 0. However, if by original you mean the very first Japanese TV movie of Ring (c. 1995), you'd have to get it from someone who recorded it of their TV (so it won't be subtitled). I have seen it for sale on a site but I can't remember what the web address was, so you'd have to do a Yahoo search for it. The original was called "Ring: Kanzan-Ban" (or something similar, my spelling may be off).

They really ruined the final big scene where Sadako (Samara) comes out of the TV. I mean they stuck a bloody car-chase in the middle of it for christ sake. Moving it from a dark cramped apartment to an airy warehouse took away from the sense of tension too.

Sadako's back-story was completely changed too, and nowhere near as creepy. I also thought they messed up by changing Sadako's look, gone was the big creepy eye and instead she just looked like a standard horror-film demon.

Tower Records in Dublin have it, but they're looking for €35 for it.

i was just on amazon(they have the ring for 15 sterling not including delivery) but they also have the ring 2 and the ring 0, didnt know there were sequels.... anyone know if they are any good?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,349 ✭✭✭✭super_furry

They're both alright, but not really up to the standards of the original. Ring 2 is a direct sequel, set a week after Ring. While Ring 0 is a prequel and goes about explaing Sadako's back-story.

Incidently, if anyone is into Japanese horrors, let me recommend both The Eye and Audition.

wasnt there a american remake of the eye, or is it that the original version of the eye only recently made, cuz i remember hearing something about it being good recently..

Yeah, I think it's a relatively new film. As far as I know, there's not remake, but I think that Tom Cruise bought the rights to remake an American version, so you should probably see the original before that. It's a great film, really creepy and kinda like a more sinister 'Sixth Sense', without the annoying kid.

i aint seen either version but i have a friend who seems as displeased about the remake as zaphod.

Hehe I've calmed down now. The thought just pissed me off a bit, taking something great and hijacking it just to make money. Though not as much as Avril Laminge and Good Charlotte and other assorted teeny boppers producing commercial watered-down poo and daring to call it punk... ah never mind, I'll save that for another rant :D

Anyhoo, I'm sure the remake's not that band, it would just be nice if Hollywood could trust us to read subtitles. Some of us can read, and more of us would probably be able to if Hollywood didn't treat us like cretins

the remake obviously isn't as good as the original but it does have it's good points.the video footage is a lot freakier and it has a few good "jump" moments, while the original was more about a sustained atmosphere of dread.

    I was in Xtra-vision, looking for a non-American / non-crap / non-dawsons crack/ non - "thats-so-not-funny" film. It's not easy. Think I'll spend a lot of money at the next Galway film fleadh!
