Is it just me or is there an increase of brutal crime in this country?
Could it just be the media selecting these stories to be published and leave out the good things going on ?
Do people only buy the newspaper because of another brutal crime victim ? Are we in danger to loose all feelings because of conditioning ? Are we going the same way as Americans and live in a state of fear ?

Just reading the newspaper today and all i can see is the rape, assault, and so on
Just to give you an example of a average day in the Irish independant:

Page 3: 'Thugs steal car after cutting victims throat at cashpoint'
Page 3:'Pensioner left lying in pool of blood after raid on home'
Page 4:'Loyalist made man smuggle drugs'
Page 8:'Former GAA star jailed for sex assaults on boy scout'
Page 8:'Judge delays sentencing of father who kept 2300 child porn images'
Page 10:'Student's attacker jailed for 5 years'
Page 10:'Rape claim file goes to prosecutor'
    Page 14:'The shadow of violence'

and that's just for today's news.

Things are as bad as the media suggests but they are not good either. There is an upsurge in the levels of random street violence, but I'd say everything else is about the same. Oh I forgot murder! Thats up by 100 in the last 20 years, but most of that can be attributed almost entirly to drug gangs killing one another.

As for your headlines Wook, three of them relate to something that in previous eras would have neven have been discussed or maybe found out about, namely child porn and sexual abuse. Its always been around but until the last 10 years it was never mentioned. So such cases would almost never be reported on, while Loyalist terrorists are not new either.

Most "Petty" crimes are down, but violent crimes are up by about 200% on last year, which was up 100% on the previous year. If this continues, we'll all be dead, mugged or beaten up in 10 yrs

while all of that is bad... we dont really have crime here. We are The Shire of the world, populated comparably by Hobbits.

Go to Washington where they dont BOTHER to report such things..
Year Population Index Violent Property Murder Rape Robbery assault Burglary Theft Car-Theft
    2000 5,894,121 300,932 21,788 279,144 196 2,737 5,812 13,043 53,476 190,650 35,018

Slightly less then twice our size in pop. terms.
