i have a dell comp (ddr ram) with one 256 slot free, as i assume the existing 256 stick is probably generic, would this act as a bottleneck and thus be worthless spending extra for second stick to be 'good', basically will it's goodness be wasted by the suckiness of the other stick ??? :?
    :)

Unless you are into overclocking there isn't really such thing as good or bad ram (the type you need is dictated by the motherboard).

It is possible that the motherboard supports a faster type of ram than you currently have (say DDR2100 vs. DDR1600).
Putting in a stick of DDR2100 along side DDR1600 will cause the DDR2100 to drop down to the lower speed.

As tribble says + if you tell us the model we can tell you exactly what you'll get away with.
