    Ah what's "rare" is wonderful!

Raggamuffin you're an inspiration to us all you know that!

i always liked 'the chalets' (both as a name and as a band). It's kind of like those 'The Whatevers' sort of bands, who always have harsh sounds (strokes, vines etc) but the chalets is very fey and effeminate. or something.

sonic youth is a great name for a band, but when the band members are pushing 40+, it just becomes ironic. and yes, i too hate when journalists point this out (hey! they're not young anymore but check out their name!') but it's still a valid point. and hey, they've become a great band again, so who gives a ****.

    nirvana: great band, pretentious name.

i quite like the red house painters, but come on! the name is kind of ... pointless, or something.

Yo La Tengo are a great band with a great name. I'm still not sure as to what their name means. i have it on good authority that it means 'i got it' (from some baseball player in Cuba in the sixties, or something, who caught the ball when nobody thought he was, hence his surprise - and the subsequent exclamation remark - when he cried: yo la tengo! however, the exclamation mark got lost in the transition to a band). also: extra mayo, please. i did her (sex, like).

oh wait, good bands but crap names. well, i can't think of any.

Raggamuffin, you know it's been postponed til the Summer, May maybe, and that's not even for certain.

Shorty are you studying perception in college? Coz you're very perceptive!! I admire how quick you were off the mark in relation to this matter....

I would have been waiting outside the TBMC with my big white face and black clobber and it all would have been for nothing....

(then wouldnt i be happy that i hadnt dressed up and put on misfit-esque face paint etc)

    Toodle piip mne hartty!!!

I must admit that I hate the band-name
Joan of Arse. It's trying to be humorous in a childish way. No offense Arse people but change the name.

I have many excellent suggestions in my cranium...

Experience would suggest to me that generally when a band has a good, clever, original name their music is almost always quite decent! I think it comes from the fact that if the band are imaginative or clever enough to come up with a good name it will follows through into their music.

Surely Pearl Jam is one of the worst names of all time and they sold a lot of records. And if I'm honest they weren't ****, as cool as it might be to say so now. Soundgarden - another **** hippy name - "Wow my gardens full of sound... man!". What the hell does "System of a Down" mean. A good band can have the ****test name and it will sound brilliant because the band are good - Nirvana?

and so raggamuffin's and amz' point is proven: perhaps good bands really do = good music (if as spoiltbrat shows, **** names = **** bands), pearl jam, soundgarden, system of a ****ing down???

(also, and yes i'm being kind of obvious here, but just because pearl jam sold lots of records doesn't mean that they were a good band).

so, i guess it's all about good bands with good names: godspeed you black emperor (pretentious? yes, but a great name nonetheless), cat power. oh i have a crap name for a good band: the dirty three. which is odd, because their song titles are generally very original...

Why was Amz trying to make a point?

    Stupid names , good music
    ==========================
    Sleater Kinny
    dashboard confessional
    Joy Zipper
    Lali Puna
    notwist
    Rollerskate Skinny
    The Helen Lundy Trio
    Yeah, Yeah, Yeah's

I would like to have listed Joan of Arse for having the most pureile and stupid bandname ever ... but then they're not a good band.

this is amz' point, which was proven by the pearl jam reference.

that wasn't so hard, now, was it?

has it ever been noted just how unbelievably cheezey black metal band names are!?! you take the colour black, the word angel, corpse or decapitation out of the language and you have gotten rid of every black metal band name ever. they always make me chortle lots

Zwan is a terrible name IMO.

How can you profess to know what point I was making??!!

That's a bit presumptuous of you o sleep!

    Now you've made me hungry...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 332 ✭✭o sleep

not really. you wrote that, in your opinion, if a band has an original name, then it follows that the music will also be original. therefore, it would follow that if a band has a **** name (say ... pearl jam) then chances are they will be a **** band too.

and it works. some of the time.

not presumptious of me at all! Amz (capitals are overrated)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,330 ✭✭✭✭Amz

I never referred to Pearl Jam once in my statement.

I think this is the first time I've ever mentioned Pearl Jam in a post i have made on this or any message board.

O Sleep if i choose to spell my name with a capital A then that's my own personal decision...

hmmright. and if i spell mine without capitals, you'd do the same, right? you didn't mention pearl jam in your post, that's why i put a 'therefore, it follows'. these simple three words indicate that it is my opinion, following on from something you yourself suggested.

    sheesh.
