Just in case you weren't feeling too old today, this will certainly change things. Each year the staff at Beloit College in Wisconsin puts together a list to try to give the faculty a sense of the mindset of this year's incoming freshmen. Here is this year's list:

The people who are starting college this fall across the nation were born in 1982.

They have no meaningful recollection of the Reagan Era and probably did not know he had ever been shot.

They were prepubescent when the Persian Gulf War was waged.

Black Monday 1987 is as significant to them as the Great Depression.

There has been only one Pope.

They were 11 when the Soviet Union broke apart and do not remember the Cold War.

They have never feared a nuclear war.

They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up.

Tianamen Square means nothing to them.

Their lifetime has always included AIDS.

Bottle caps have always been screw off and plastic.

Atari predates them, as do vinyl albums. The expression "you sound like a broken record" means nothing to them.

They have never owned a record player.

They have likely never played Pac Man and have never heard of Pong.

They may have never heard of an 8-track. The Compact Disc was introduced when they were 1 year old.

As far as they know, stamps have always cost about 33 cents.

They have always had an answering machine.

Most have never seen a TV set with only 13 channels, do not even know what UHF or VHF means, nor have they seen a black-and-white TV.

    They have always had cable.

There has always been VCRs, but they have no idea what BETA is.

They cannot fathom not having a remote control.

They were born the year that Walkmans were introduced by Sony.

Roller-skating has always meant inline for them.

Jay Leno has always been on the Tonight Show.

They have no idea when or why Jordache jeans were cool.

Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave.

They have never seen Larry Bird play.

They never took a swim and thought about Jaws.

The Vietnam War is as ancient history to them as WWI, WWII and the Civil War.

They have no idea that Americans were ever held hostage in Iran.

They can't imagine what hard contact lenses are.

They don't know who Mork was or where he was from. They never heard: "Where's the beef?", "I'd walked a mile for a Camel", Or "de plane!, de plane!"

They do not care who shot J.R. and have no idea who J.R. is.

The Titanic was found? They thought we always knew where it was.

Michael Jackson has always been white.

Kansas, Chicago, Boston, America, and Alabama are places, not groups.

McDonalds never came in Styrofoam containers.
    There has always been MTV.

They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter.

    Do you feel old yet?

What about people who never know a time when there wasn't a home computer? I think 84 was the first time I actually had a home computer and after that there has always been at least 1 computer in the house.

They have no meaningful recollection of the Reagan Era and probably did not know he had ever been shot.
I have no recollection of it but I do know that.
They were prepubescent when the Persian Gulf War was waged.
I can remember that vividly, but the point stands.
Black Monday 1987 is as significant to them as the Great Depression.
    Ya got me there. I haven't a clue biggrin.gif
There has been only one Pope.
Eh.... I do realise that there have been many popes down through the years rolleyes.gif
They were 11 when the Soviet Union broke apart and do not remember the Cold War.
I can still remember seeing the Berlin wall falling on TV. I guess I wasn't a typical 10/11 year old.
They have never feared a nuclear war.
    Oh but I have ^_^
They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up.
True. I saw some documentary on the telly about it wink.gif
Tianamen Square means nothing to them.
    Wrong.
Their lifetime has always included AIDS.
    True
Bottle caps have always been screw off and plastic.
    Again, True smile.gif
Atari predates them, as do vinyl albums. The expression "you sound like a broken record" means nothing to them.
I remember my old Atari 2600 smile.gif And I do understand that phrase too...
They have never owned a record player.
I still have it. Not that it works any more.
They have likely never played Pac Man and have never heard of Pong.
Wrong wrong wrong wrong tongue.gif I played pac man and pong loadsa times.
They may have never heard of an 8-track. The Compact Disc was introduced when they were 1 year old.
I've heard of 8-Tracks. Never seen one though smile.gif

As far as they know, stamps have always cost about 33 cents.
    Ummm...
They have always had an answering machine.
Nope... only got it 2 years ago smile.gif
Most have never seen a TV set with only 13 channels, do not even know what UHF or VHF means, nor have they seen a black-and-white TV.
I still have the old B&W telly, with UHF and VHF bands smile.gif And it only has 8 channels.
    They have always had cable.
    Nope
There has always been VCRs, but they have no idea what BETA is.
BETA was once a competing video format, developed by Sony if I recall correctly. TAKE IT tongue.gif
They cannot fathom not having a remote control.
The aforementioned black 'n white TV has no remote.
They were born the year that Walkmans were introduced by Sony.

Roller-skating has always meant inline for them.
Roller-skating has always meant nothing to me smile.gif
Jay Leno has always been on the Tonight Show.
    Yeah whatever smile.gif
They have no idea when or why Jordache jeans were cool.
I have no idea what Jordache jeans are.
Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave.
Nope. It was often cooked in a pot on the cooker smile.gif
They have never seen Larry Bird play.
I have never heard of Larry Bird, let alone see him play whatever it is he plays.
They never took a swim and thought about Jaws.
Correct. Because Jaws is a sh1te film smile.gif
The Vietnam War is as ancient history to them as WWI, WWII and the Civil War.
I wouldn't call it "ancient" history.
They have no idea that Americans were ever held hostage in Iran.
    Wrong.
They can't imagine what hard contact lenses are.
I can't imagine what soft lenses are either since I don't wear 'em.
They don't know who Mork was or where he was from. They never heard: "Where's the beef?", "I'd walked a mile for a Camel", Or "de plane!, de plane!"
    Ahem... Mork and Mindy.
They do not care who shot J.R. and have no idea who J.R. is.
I don't give a sh1t who shot JR, but I know he was the big guy with the big hat from Dallas smile.gif
The Titanic was found? They thought we always knew where it was.
    Nope. 1987 wasn't it?
Michael Jackson has always been white.
    ROFLAMO biggrin.gif (No.)
Kansas, Chicago, Boston, America, and Alabama are places, not groups.
    Indeed.
McDonalds never came in Styrofoam containers.
    There has always been MTV.
    No and no.
They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter.
    I used a typewriter before I used a computer.
    Do you feel old yet?
Judging by the assumptions that this makes, I must feel older than I am wink.gif

1980, and I do remember the metal caps on soft-drinks, I think it was C&A that had them at the time....

Most (all) of that is based on Americans, and I personaly couldn't give a cr@p about Ronaldo Regan.

God, it does make you feel old.
Anyone remember the short lived radio-watch?
They were coool, with those funky orange earphones. smile.gif

You must realise that the above is aimed at the US MTV generation, so chances are that most if not all of those points stand.

Hmm, starting to feel a little old alright. Still a long way to go before DeVore territory though tongue.gif

Born in '77 and the two news items that I seen when I was a kid that I've always remembered is the shuttle blowing up and seeing the guy in front of the tank in Tianamen square.

I bet thats all from an american point of view - and as we all know the average american is as intelligent as a chipmunk.

A study a couple of years back showed that 60% of all American High School leavers were not able to point out america on an unnamed map of the world!

    I'd believe that.

I recall someone telling me he heard of an American giving his daughter a graduation present of "A holiday in Paris" only she didn't want it because the drive would be too far. rolleyes.gif

78% of all statistics are made up.

    Tom.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,839 ✭✭✭bubbles

Aye, dunno about statistics, but its a fact the the average american is as stupid as hobby horse sh!te.

Don't get me wrong ! I do respect americans. As far as I'm concered they make great pets, and every home should have one.

But remember kids, an American is for life, not just for x-mas... so spend a little extra cash for a water bottle which will keep them alive for at least a week.

Remember to post your scores on Amerigotci website and register how long you managed to keep your american alive.

Current High Score: 13 years 5 months 12 days

Method of death: Gained access to a gun, shot the whole family, planted little bomb under thier bodies before turning gun on self.

Reason for death: Owner gave american access to violent video games.

From what I can see everybody here is under 30 which isn't old. For those of us in the mid-20's or there abouts, remember this: Chances are you're only 1/3 of the way through your entire lifespan.
