    Allo,

I've not been fishing since I left school (about 5 years ago), and I think I'll be living near some of the canals on the northside in the near future.

Anyway, all my old fishing gear is long gone, and I've a hankering to go and fish again. Anyone got any recommendations for some reasonably priced stuff for a bit of coarse fishing?

    hmmm.
Dpends what you mean by reasonably prriced!

Well to start off, i would recommend you stay away from poles. They are quite expensive and the cheaper collapsable poles just are not good.

I bought a quivver tip last summer and i used it down in Sallins and caught quite a few Breem. They can be picked up for around the 100 mark in Rory's and they are prety good if not v.good quality. For bait i used red chanandler bongs (chandlers) on a size 12-14 hook, with ground bait in a swim feeder. The ground bait i used was just regualr coarse ground bait mixed with a few chandlers and corn. Cast in to a spot and then throw a few handfulls into the area you casted and sit back and watch your quivver shiver!!

For Roache, i would recommend a match rod. 50-60 in Rory's or The Rod And Gun. (btw you will also need a match reel which can be used on either a match or quivver tip. usually around the 40 mark for a half decent one) For bait, you can't go wrong with red chandlers on a size 16 hook. You will get better results if you float fish so you will need floats and lead shot.

    For pike.......pray!

Pop into Eason`s or any good magazine store and buy Coarse fisherman magazine or suchlike. Buy Angling Times aswell and check all the tackle reviews. You`ll soon get a grip!

Southside Angling, Clanbrassil St., is a cracking store for coarse tackle, bait, catalogues etc.

    noooooooooooooo!!
don't get a coarse angling magazine... that will make you think you need all the top gear they're advertising.

go into a tackle shop, and talk to the man behind the counter. he'll tell you exactly what you need. most of the time they know fully what they're talking about, and they will honestly give you what you need, and probably answer any questions you have also.

I don't do much coarse fishing, but i would still recommend you to use as light tackle as possible - even for pike. heavy line and rods kill the sport, and you would be surprised at the size of the fish u can catch on light line
