I think that the IrelandOffline committee should find this piece very useful in getting the likes of Eircom to implement Flat Rate Access:

    Here's a snip:

"UK dial-up market gets official seal of approval
    By Reuters

Telecoms regulator Oftel has said Britain's dial-up Internet access market was flourishing, and that consumers were getting a wide range of unmetered access services at competitive prices. "

"BT to launch high-speed satellite web service

BT is today expected to launch a satellite service which will bring high-speed internet services to rural Britain for the first time."

this sat service, while its overly expensive, since its uk based cant it service the republic, now i know bt dont operate here but esat is owned by bt so couldnt esat use the new bt network to offer it as well in the republic

Most sat services rely on a VPN/TIS/Proxy to route all packets over the satellite, but as BT are the Sat ISP and Uplink ISP they will route all packets @ the uplink ISP automatically so we cant use it as we can use BT.

possibly but this is a quote from the link above.
<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Mr Green says: "The launch of our satellite service will meet the demand for always on, high-speed internet services for businesses in more remote locations, and will now mean more than 90% of customers connected to an enabled exchange will be able to access broadband technology."</font>
