Ireland ranks high in an international survey of home Internet users with 46 percent of Irish adults having home access.
According to the new survey, Ireland and the UK are the two countries in Europe most likely to have users accessing the Internet other than from a home PC.

The figures, from Nielsen//NetRatings, show that 420 million people around the world now have access to the Internet.

While 46 percent of Internet users in Ireland access the Web from home, European nations that ranked higher than Ireland were, Sweden with 61 percent, Denmark with 58 percent, The Netherlands with 56 percent, Norway with 53 percent, and Finland with 49 percent.

The Q1 results from the regular survey reveal that the US and Canada still account for the world's largest Internet access with 41 percent of the global audience.

Europe, the Middle East and Africa are in second place with 27 percent followed by Asia Pacific with 20 percent and trailed by Latin America with only four percent.

In terms of penetration levels, just over a quarter of European households have Internet access via a home PC, compared to one-third in Asia Pacific and nearly half of American households.

Nielsen's Richard Goosey said "Don't expect this American domination to last long adding that PC ownership is growing significantly in Europe and Asia Pacific."

Over the next 12 months, it is expected that another nine percent of European households plan on acquiring Internet access.

Goosey noted that Germany and the UK continue to dominate Europe in terms of Internet access.

The Europe and Asia Pacific results show Sweden at the top with 61 percent of people surveyed having Internet access at home and 41 percent at work.

Ireland comes in at 46 percent, the same as the UK, and registers 25 percent with work access compared to the UK which has 26 percent work access.

According to the report, Ireland has 17 percent of users browsing for products on-line and eight percent actually buying. This compares to 19 percent of UK users browsing and 11 percent buying in the UK with Sweden again dominating the European figures with 46 percent browsing and 26 percent making a purchase on-line.

The Nielsen survey also shows that half of Europeans aged over 16 have the use of a mobile phone with Finland having a rate of three-in-four.

Most users worldwide have Internet access through a work PC rather than through a source such as a mobile phone, PalmPilot or a TV, according to the survey.
