Come on guys - come up with a scheme whereby we can elect a chairman, vote on a name and get things moving again.

Why should there be a second vote?
The name has been chosen, hmmm.
Now as MOST people want, this interim cttee should get on with the bloody thing!

Hey I thought the name had been picked too, but obviously with all the moaning we'll have to have some sort of vote. No idea where the committee has gone, must be all discussing things in private again :\

Am part of the committee, but it seems to be dead... response wise that is. Just to put something in here what my thoughts of the whole naming issue is. (I posted it on ie.comp before)...

    snip
From my perspective, how this whole unfortunate situation developed is
partly by miscommunication as well as a "bit" of over reaction on Howard's
    side.

I understand that 37 people have voted for a name by mailing Howard directly
instead of posting it in the group. Howard did the count and announced the
end-result, but failing to give a comment as to "how" this result was
assembled. The reason why this result was questioned was the lack of public
postings, as the few that were existend, voted for a different name.

A short message that could have looked like this, would have most likely
    prevented this whole mess:

    ..........................
Tonight by 12 o'clock xzy votes where given. This is the conclusion:

    Ireland Offline: x votes
    CUBIC: y votes
    CUBIT: z votes

A detailed list of votes is available upon request.
    ............................

I even doubt that anyone would have requested details. Its all about
transparency. I agree that Howard did a great job in organising and driving
things forward, but I'm rather disappointed in his over-reaction and use of
profanity and insults. At no time was there ANY question about his
integrity, but merely about the details of the result, which Howard in turn
seems to have interpreted as such.

I would also like Howard to return as chairman, though not without slight
concerns because of this issue, but I believe that things can be said in the
"heat of battle" that weren't meant.

    ---- snip ----

The whole situation is unfortunate, but I strongly agree: let's move on =)

    Regards, Marco...

I think Martin Harran's most recent post on ie.comp (quoted below) puts things nicely into perspective and clears up most issues. As far as I'm concerned, the issues and the committee should remain very much alive. It's unfortunate that it has come to a re-vote for the name, but so be it. It should be a quick, civilized and transparent affair.
    <font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">From Martin Harran (as posted on ie.comp smile.gif

There seems to be some sort of problem with committee emails at the moment.
I have been trying to get some discussion going over the last 2 days but am
    getting minimal response.

I hope my fellow committee members don't mind me coming forward with my
views, but if we don't get our act together quckly, this whole campaign will
fall flat on its face - bear in mind we only have 14 days to 'cutoff' for
    the Esat 2000.

I've been in touch with Howard9 by email and he has informed me that:

"I won't be contributing to the threads on ie.comp or the mailing list
on the issue. I believe in taking decisions and moving on, and that's what
    I'll do, regrettably."

I am appalled that things have come to this state but I think Howard's
    decision is final.

If we are going to move on with things, I think we must move initially to
appoint someone to replace Howard to take overall control and act as our
point of contact with Esat and the media. We should also try to set out some
guidelines on that person's authority and responsibilities.

I also think we need to put the name issue to bed for once and for all, I
don't like 'Florida' type recounts but I think we have to do one on this or
it will rumble on for a long time and distract our energies from the real
    issues.

If no-one else is prepared to take on a Chairman role, I am prepared to take
on a co-ordinator role, purely on an "acting" basis until we get someone
officially appointed. I am not interested in it ongoing because I believe
that for logistical reasons, the Chairman or Chairwoman should be Dublin
    based.

If people are prepared to run with this, then I propose the following plan
    of action:

    1) We invite fresh submissions on names to be made with a cut-off of 8:00
p.m tomorrow night (Friday) to be either posted on a new thread on ie.comp
or sent to me by email.

    2) By 10:00 p.m tomorrow night, I will post all suggested names on ie.comp
with a brief summary of the pro's and cons of each name; anyone who feels I
have not given a fair summary can challenge it on ie.comp.

    3) Voting to take place from the time I post the names up until 12:00 noon
    on Saturday.

    4) Votes to be cast by email to me.

    5) Single Transferrable Voting to apply - whilst this makes the counting
more complicated, I think it will give better consensus. For anyone not
familiar with STV, I have made some notes on how it works at the end of this
    email

    6) Saturday evening or Sunday morning., I will post result on ie.comp along
with a list of those who voted and how they voted, except where somone
explicitly tells me in the email that they do not want their vote disclosed.
THIS RESULT TO BE TAKEN AS FINAL.

    5) On Monday, Elana Kehoe (hopefully, she is still willing to do this!)
contacts ESAT set up meeting for early next week involving her and me; I can
travel to Dublin for this and tie it in with some other business

    6) Niall O'Keefe to have initial web site up and running by this middle of
next week, subject to him getting content suggestions from people; I will
help Niall to assemble this content.

    7) John Marcus and David Long to have reports on technical and statistical
issues ready by end of next week. I will pull together a draft article on
this by following Sunday for circulating to the media; article to be posted
on our web site for discussion plus ideas for getting it into media.

    8) Aim for meeting in Dublin in about 3 weeks time at which we agree forward
plan and appoint chairman and other officers.

Don't want to seem pushy on this, but IMO if someone doesn't take a lead, we
might as well forget the whole thing

I would also ask that whilst we all enjoy the 'cut and thrust' of usenet
discusssion, can we please try to avoid personal slanging matches on these
particular issues, we just don't have the time to get distracted.

    Single Transferrable Voting
    ====================
You vote for any number of names you want to in order of preference e.g.
    1) Ireland Offline
    2) CUBIT
    3) CUBIC
    4) NAILBOMB etc.
The votes go through a first count and the lowest scoring one is eliminated.
All votes cast for the eliminated name are then recast using the voter's
    next preference.
In the example above, if IrelandOffline was eliminated, then the vote would
    be transferred to CUBIT
A second count is done using the same process; again using the example
above, if CUBIT got elimininated in the second round, the vote would
    transfer to CUBIC.
The proceess is continued in the same way until one name is left.
(For those knowledgeable about STV, I know there are short cuts in this
using quotas but with the number of votes likely to be cast, let's keep it
    simple.)

Hope that clears things up - now lets just support Martin, stop squabbling over bullsh|t and get on with it.

Just got back from a trip, only to read this bull**** snivelling crap from the mighty web designer...who orchestrated the whole coup to start with !

I now see that the Irish Times has a big article on Surf No Limits today, yet this new banana committee you have didn't even manage to get a mention for your new group. It's hard to believe how such a complete group of dossers can drive the best guy in the whole group out and then a week later still not manage to get in on the key story in the IT.

Hey you 37 ! if you have any sense at all you'll kick these incompetent turncoats out and get the main man back !! what have they been doing other than screwing their main man and beautifying their web site ?
