Reposting from ie.comp - the person to write to is martinharran AT esatclear.ie . Booth closes at 12 Sat morning so don't come complaining if you miss out wink.gif

Note: please enter VOTE on the subject line to make it easier for me to
    collect them together.

The procedure is Single Transferable Vote . This means you can vote for as
many names as you want, but they MUST be marked in order of preference i.e.
    1 firstchoice
    2 second choice name
    etc

I would ask people to not go overboard on the voting though - think of the
poor teller who has to count them smile.gif

Notes on how STVworks are given at the end of this email.

Voting is now open (a couple of people who are away for weekend have already
voted) and closes at 12:00 noon tomorrow (Saturday) and I hope to have
    counting complete later that evening.

In the interests of transparency, I have said that I will post details of
the voting on ie.comp; if you do NOT want your vote publicised, you MUST
explicitly state this in your email.

    Martin Harran

    Single Transferrable Voting
    ====================
You vote for any number of names you want to in order of preference e.g.
    1) Ireland Offline
    2) CUBIT
    3) CUBIC
    4) NAILBOMB etc.
The votes go through a first count and the lowest scoring one is eliminated.
All votes cast for the eliminated name are then recast using the voter's
    next preference.
In the example above, if IrelandOffline was eliminated, then the vote would
    be transferred to CUBIT
A second count is done using the same process; again using the example
above, if CUBIT got elimininated in the second round, the vote would
    transfer to CUBIC.
The proceess is continued in the same way until one name is left.
(For those knowledgeable about STV, I know there are short cuts in this
using quotas but with the number of votes likely to be cast, let's keep it
    simple.)

I suggested that new proposals on names could be put forward up until 8:00
    p.m. this evening.

As we are going to have single transferrable voting which means people can
vote for as many names as they want, I think it might be useful to recap the
names suggested so far. I would ask people to not go overboard on the
voting though - think of the poor teller who has to count them smile.gif

To refresh everyone's mind, I have given a list of all these below (apart
from ones obviously made in jest), and, where appropriate, a brief summary
of what I see as the main arguments for/against. They are not in any
particular order, except that the 3 front runners last time are at the top
of the list; the others are just in the sequence I remembered them or found
    them in the posts

If anyone wants to add to this or correct my summary, please do so.

One personal comment I would make is in regard to the domain name; IMO it is
not *essential* that the domain name is same as group name but it would be
*beneficial*; to that end, I have included a couple of variations on CUBIT
and CUBIC that I suggested late in the day to Howard.

Also, whilst 'somename.ie' would be best, the cost and timescale suggests
that we should settle for 'somename.com' at this stage

    =========================================================================

    IRELANDOFFLINE
Points for: catchy, domain name available
Points against: negative, does not really say what we stand for, could be
seen as parody on IOL which will not help our discussions with them next
week (see separate posting on "ESAT Meeting")

CUBIC (Campaign forUnmetered and Broadband Internet Connectivity)
CUBIT (Campaign forUnmetered and Broadband Internet Telecommunications)
(As these are similar, I'm summarising them together)

Points for: catchy, single word, full name states our objective.
Against: although single word, the words themselves do not really reflect
what we are about; domain names not available (although irishcubic.com and
    irishcubit.com are available)

Possible variations on these could be ICUBIT (Irish Campaign.....) or CUBITI
    (Campaign...Telecommunications in Ireland) - icubit.com and cubiti.com are
both available (icubic.com and cubici.com are both gone)

CUBA (Campaign for Unmetered and Broadband Access)
    For: simple
    Against: ?

CRISP (Campaign for Real Internet Service Provision)
    For: simple
    Against: ?

MAIA : Movement for Affordable Internet Access

Points for: catchy, single word, full name states our objective.
Against: although single word, the words themselves do not really reflect
what we are about; how do you pronounce it?

MAFIA : Movement for Affordable (Free?) Internet Access

Points for: catchy, single word, full name except for 'free' states our
    objective.
Against: mafia already is well known body :-)

    NUI : Net Users Ireland
    For: simple
Against: doesn't state our aims, confusion with national University of
    Ireland

    AIM : Affordable Internet Movement
For: simple, states our aims (pun intended)
Against: already exists in couple of connotations

CRAIC (Campaign for Reliable Affordable Internet Connection )
    For: simple, states our aims
Against: suggests another sort of 'crack', also CRAIC is well known movement
for traditional music (at least around Donegal/Tyrone)

    CIH (Campaign Internet Highway)
    For: simple
Against: better known as a nasty computer virus

    ROCHTAIN (Irish for 'Access')
For: nice use of Irish Language
Against: what does it mean to people who don't speak Irish

    NIA (National Internet Access)
    For: simple
    Against: ?

    IIUA -(Irish Internet Users Association)
    For: simple
    Against: doesn't state our aims

CAIN (Campaign for unmetered internet access)
    For: simple
Against: Acronym doesn't really match full name

    NAG (Net Access group)
For: Suggests we are going to nag Eircom, ODTR, everyone until we get what
    we want
Against: who likes a nag :-)

    INTERCAM (Internet Campaign) or NETCAM
    For: Simple, catchy
    Against: ?

MANIA (Movement for Affordable National Internet Access)
For: punchy acronym, name suggests what we are after
    Against: ?

CHOPSTIC (Campaign to Have ODTR Power Supplemented To Transform Internet
    Communications)
    For: ?
Against: unwieldy, also focused solely on ODTR

MADFRISBEE (Movement to Allow Development of Flat Rate Internet Supporting
    Broadband Economically for Everyone)
    For: ?
    Against: unwieldy

NAILBOMB (National Action for Internet Local-Loop Based On Modern Broadband)
    For: ?
    Against: unwieldy

    Voting's over.

The "masses" (well- 23 people) have spoken and 12 people voted for one name, which therefore emerged the winner.

And so.. the name remains: IrelandOFFline

    Fine by moi smile.gif
