Eircom this week announced that it won't be offering a television / video-on demand service via ADSL for the considerable future - not until late 2002 at the earliest. Announcing plans to restructure itself after its sale of Eircell to Vodafone-Airtouch plc, it says it will concentrate on laying a high-speed ADSL network and operating internet services over that network. The move is thought to be a response to NTL's decision not to expand its cable modem service in the near future. Indeed it could be argued that the only reason Eircom wanted to offer TV services in the first place was to defend itself against a bundled TV-telephone-internet service from NTL. Now that NTL won't be offering anything bundled other than CPS-telephony (via Eircom landlines) and dial-up internet, there is no need for it to enter that market. Eircom however blamed the ODTR for delays in deciding whether or not to grant it a cable TV licence, as well as faults with its existing equipment and suppliers (FutureTV).

I would say all bets regarding what Eircom will do are off until O'Reilly gets his hands on it. What the "new" Eircom Limited will do is anyones guess. The current Eircom plc still has plans to launch some sort of ADSL service in some areas this year, but AFAIK without TV. Very vague at the moment, more details when I get them....
