Please Quit Boards.ie - the Service is Unreliable

Guys I'm mainly a lurker on the list but pick up loads of information from all the discussion and postings (thanks to all).

HOWEVER I get really frustrated with the sheer unavailability of the service. The Boards.ie service is more often unavailable than not since this discussion list switched over to them. One of the original reasons for switching over was to avoid ads (which I never found intrusive) but now Boards.ie have them too.

My vote is to please move back to wherever the discussion list was before or else find a more reliable service provider.

    Anyone else agree/disagree?

    MarkH.

Can't say that I've ever had a problem accessing the Boards.ie site & having a few unobtrusive ads is much preferable to a subs. fee.........

    Sorry, can't agree

Sorry, but those who remember the original system (ezboard.com) will agree with me that Boards.ie is far better. Ezboard had annoying pop-up ads, Boards.ie has only in-page ads that stay out of the way. Ezboards was down quite often and was dead slow. Boards.ie is up most of the time and is fast.

Sorry, but Boards.ie is my choice anytime. And once again, thanks to them for hosting us.

I've never had a problem accessing Boards.ie And as for the ads, well if you notice there was always a space at the top of the page where thay usually promoted one of their own sites. Now they have gotten someone to pay for advertising to try to offset the costs of running boards.ie, they have also limited the size of the adverts so your not going to be dowloading huge ads and waiting for the page to load. Isay fair play to them they have to find a way to pay for it somehow!! If you did frequent the ezboards list you would have noticed that the service was frequently slow (it took 2 days for my password to be delivered), and that the adverts were "IN YOUR FACE" ie pop-ups everytime you opened a thread.

I for one dont want to move and think Boards.ie is a class act.

Sorry about your concerns Mark, I will inform the other admins and let them know about the annoying ads.

    All the best,

    John.

Ah, those were the days.... the ezboard for ICDG with the ever so annoying pop-ups and banners telling you to go Gold and remove ads. Aaaahhhhh! I also have to agree with the rest of the people here that Boards.ie are much better than ezboards. Just a shame that vBulletin boards aren't used instead of UBB. The one thing missing is a column which tells you who posted last. Apart from that, it has my thumbs up! smile.gif

I agree - but apart from that - a superb service.

Since there are about 60 people at any one time during the day looking at boards.ie and sitting on IRC (with the administrator).... we know any time the boards are down for more then a minute and as people have said here, I can count the number of such occurances on one hand.

Perhaps it's webfactory's DNS that is the problem. If you have the problem again, next time please go to dos and a type:

    tracert www.boards.ie

and paste the results into a thread in the admin forum.

As for the ads, we have always had ads since you guys were here. The only new thing is that soon we'll get paid for them. Sorry but someone has to pay for the server.

    Hi Mark

If you can tell us when you have experienced the outages, we can check the server logs to confirm if the problem was on our end our with your service provider DNS server.

Very often problems like this tend to be with the service provider or the routing between you and the site you are trying to get to. Again if you can give us some more information we can try to address your concerns.

A quick look over the server logs for the last 2 weeks shows it was down once. That was for a server patch.

As for the Adverts, they have been there for a long time, their purpose is to allow is to improve the service. Running a service this size is quite expensive.

Again, looking forward to hearing from you.

    Vexorg

{opps looks like myself and DeV are thinking along the same lines, but we are keen to find out if there is a problem that we are unaware of, we get to hear about the problems very quickly)

Is there an irc channel that is associated with www.boards.ie?

Many of the "hardcore" members can be found in #quake.ie and #fortress.ie on irc.barrysworld.com and irc.b0rk.co.uk part of the quakenet network of irc servers.

Boards has evolved from an online gaming bulletin board to the much broader based community it is today.

We are planning a broader boards.ie irc channel (imaginatively called #boards.ie) on
    Quakenet (an excellent irc net.)

Point mIrc at irc.barrysworld.com and head over to #fortress.ie , #quake.ie and you'll find us under our boards names.

Well I posted up legitimate difficulties that I have been having with the service and got two sorts of replies:

    1. constructive comments from technical folk with a number of suggestions I shall try

    2. distorted drivel from people who never read my original mail. Despite the fact that I explicitly said that I found ads unobtrusive, Farls and others wrote me off as complaining about them. Then there's nasty comments from "Gladiator" who tells me "your [sic] just one of those people that like to *****".

For those who actually read me mail and offered suggestions - thanks. I will revert to you directly in a week or so once I've done some testing at this end.

    Mark.
