£4.33 for a box office movie!

Can somebody please tell me what the price of a Sky Box Office movie is in the UK?

Here in Ireland they have jacked the price up to a whopping IR£4.33. This seems to be for all movies, not just a select one. The price last time I checked was IR£3 (very recently).

In my opinion IR£4.33 is far too much. A video rental would be much cheaper, and it's almost as pricey as going to the cinema.

i think it is £3.25 in the UK. the local video shop is much better anyway and more importantly cheaper too!!!!!!!

I hope you're right - it will be a nice step forward when the movies that we watch on Box Office haven't been available in Xtravision for weeks!

Anyone have any idea if/when we will get cinema releases on box office? Wouldn't it be great!!

29" telly too small. Methinks a Pioneer 42" Plasma TV fits the bill smile.gif or the Philips alternative. Just hang on the wall or if in bed pin it to the ceiling! Mmm Nice. One can only dream.... wink.gif

Back on topic, now that U>Direct PPV sport and films has gone, Sky Box Office has no competition and can charge what it likes although it will still lose custom if cost is too expensive

When did U>Direct disappear?? I hadn't noticed until I saw Will's post. That was a pretty rapid disappearance, given that it was only a few weeks ago we watched Gladiator on their channel.

    Shame.

U>Direct just had an advert on "The Health channel"..(dont ask smile.gif).

"you only pay for what you watch"

    Are they really gone?

Although the add said that they are in the EPG and they are quite abviously not.

£4.33 is very expensive to watch a movie that was available 6 months ago on video/DVD.
I also thought the price a little odd until I got the old Euro calculator out, €5.50 sounds even worse.

Course it does - but we'll all have to get used to things looking more expensive. And if anyone starts to say E1.10 > STG£1.00 like they've been doing with IR£ then I will start to dispair.

But the Box Office movies are too expensive. If they want to compete with the likes of Xtravision, who are much cheaper than video hire places in GB, they need to have lower prices.

True, video shops here generally charge IR£3.50 for new releases. Why would anybody in there right mind pay Sky almost an extra quid for older movies??

Incedently, the UK price is UK£3.25 which equates to IR£4.13. So what exchange rate are Sky using?? smile.gif

Fair point - I suppose the rate does fluctuate, but bear in mind that its been cheaper in ROI for a a long time - things had to change sooner or later.

U>Direct films, U>Direct sports and B4U>Direct closed coz basically it was not making enough dosh. Hardly surprising considering the hassle involved in ordering anything off 'em. Some of their other channels including B4u>Music and B4U Movies and Red Hot Euro are still on air.

Monopoly rates. They see no real competition in Chorus / NTL here and so have decided that with the change over to Euros everything needs to go up. So a quid here a fiver there sure whos counting? No regulatory body here can stop them raising their prices further.

Truth is, lots of people would pay the extra pound to save the hassle of going to the video shop. Much easier to stay on the couch and press a few buttons.

For example, I live five mins walk from Dominos but I've ordered delivery on two occasions that I was either too tired or busy to go myself. The cost difference between collection and delivery is a lot more than a pound (more like £4) but it was worth it to me in those instances.

Personally, I'd far rather to get out the DVD from my local Extra Vision. It's cheaper, you get your new releases quicker and the picture quality and 5.1Ch digital sound are bonuses too (for those of us with large widescreens and a dolby digital amp).

As for the £STG/£IR conversion, companies have been doing this exactly as they want for years. Also, we had better be ready for the considerable price hikes when the £ to € (Ctrl + Alt + 4) conversion takes place year. I don't see dunnes setting their price point at anything other than €0.99.

Could you please elaborate on what technology advance you are talking about and when it will be available.

    Thanks

Sky Box Office would be good enough if you had a Macrovision decryption setup wink.gif

I believe that U>Direct (RIP) didn't use Macrovision to hinder taping the film. Pity there weren't many films to bother taping...
