As of from 2nd July, all new SD customers in IRL must have the phoneline connected permanently to the digibox during the 12 month contract just like in UK. Previously, it was not obligitory to connect the line. Also means that if you don't have a phoneline (lots of people just use a mobile phone), you can no longer avail of the subsidised digibox & minidish offer.

    What's everyone think?

Well from a Retail point of view this is a negative step as most people object to the phoneline. I think sky will lose more than they will gain on this issue.

Our system was installed during the day while i was at school but i think i remember my mother saying that the installer kinda tried to persuade her to not bother with the foneline. We didnt.

just pay £20 and get a DIY extension kit.
and i dont see how sky could enforce this anyways?
the digi box wont be making a constant connection, this is a stupid idea, how the hell would they know?
    crap.

Agree with you Tony and it is also hassle for installers who have to put in the fonelines especially as most people have their phone socket in the hallway and digibox in sitting room meaning a lot of phone cable going round skirtings or whatever. Plus, the only thing the phoneline needs to be connected for is so that Sky can check how much you owe from SBO events. It's not like UK where they can send emails, vote, and buy stuff from Open.. etc. Unless maybe Sky are gonna let us use Open... which I doubt.

Another disadvantage of permanent phoneline being connected is if lightning strikes your phoneline, it's bye-bye digibox.

Thanx for the link Chernobyl. That explains why phonelines must be connected permanently like in UK. I reckon that the undisclosed telecom company mentioned in the report is Eircom. Wonder when we will see these new developments.

Slightly off topic, I didn't know the digibox modem was as slow as 28K!
