Why oh why do people insist on blaming the server if their game or website or ubb is slow/not responding.

It could be anything from your machine to your ISP to the general internet.

This boards server is extremely fast for me from home, moderate to slow from work because we share a single ISDN line. At 3:30 it crawls because america wakes up and from Indigo its pants because Indigo has atrocious upstream connectivity through Alter.Net

Its not always the end server, in fact its almost never the end server unless its a p60 or something.

It's horribly slow for me, but I think there is a lot of messing going on at the moment.

As I try from different locations and I get varying speeds.

I heard two days ago a major ISP got hit with a cool DoS attack which messed up some of the Ultima Online Servers.

    The boards run on a P60 wink.gif

Its Eircom. Over the last few weeks Ive noticed the whole net getting slower and slower.

    lol...

...yeah, it's all Eircom's fault, a little Irish ISP is tearing apart, slowing down and generally breaking the whole internet.

    pwease... *shakes head*

If you find the boards slow (and I'm getting sub 5-sec response times to pages) then do this...

Go to a dos box and type:
    tracert www.boards.ie

Copy the resultant mass of gobbledegook and post it here.

That way I can see whats causing your lag.

Ok, the first couple of hops got cut off by the windows DOS box. I'm using Esat no limits - speeds today seem fine but yesterday it was a bit manky.

    I said:
At 3:30 it crawls because america wakes up and from Indigo its pants because Indigo has atrocious upstream connectivity through Alter.Net

Now look at this line from your traceroute.
    10 234 ms 220 ms 238 ms 111.ATM2-0.XR2.TCO1.ALTER.NET [146.188.160.78]
    11 581 ms 612 ms 544 ms 292.ATM3-0.TR2.DCA8.ALTER.NET [152.63.32.218]

This means the ping times to the first were about the 230 mark, fairly acceptible, then you blow up to 5-600. Thats alter.nets fault.

If you use Iol you will get better connectivity because they dont go through the UK and the ATROCIOUS alter.net.
They got direct Dublin to NY.

    Tom.

btw the delay at the 16th hop is typical because we protect ourselves from ping bombing and flooding by refusing pings in general. The first three sets of numbers are what you are looking for, they represent 1/1000th of a second response time.

Bah Lucutus I meant Irish ISP's are getting slower due to Eircom not having enough bandwidth tongue.gif

Ok, I just tried tracerouting the boards again tonight, @1.15 am using Esat no limits. It seems the number of hops has jumped from 17 to 24!

What you have to remember is the boards are over twice as popular as they were before. Before we were getting 100,000 page impressions a month. Now its 218,000 and rising at a fair rate.

The point is that the machine we are on is more then adequate to handle the load, what we need is for the Irish ISP's to improve their upstream bandwidth.

Previously the boards were hosted on a games server, which could well have been unable to support this level of activity. At the very least it would have affected ping times.

Also, we were at the mercy of Eircom. One flick of a switch and we are lost as a community. This way I'm hoping the advertisments will at least pay for the server (£4,000), once we sell some smile.gif

If the boards are slow (and I dont think they are, I certainly rarely experience slowdowns too often), then be sure you are complaining to the right people. Your ISPs should be made aware of any problems like this you are having. It will affect all US browsing.

    Tom.

Nope Munch, check these lines in your trace.
    13 1106 ms 289 ms 335 ms sjc2-core4-fa4-1-0.atlas.digex.net [165.117.50.1

Those are BIG assed spikes. Seems like digex are having a problem.

IOL have the best US connectivity btw.

I think the point is that the boards were really fast before the whole face changed (from black). It was commented almost immediately that they slowed down horribly after that.

Was the server changed to a P60 during this time? smile.gif
