    Julie Hayde from RTE emailled me to tell me that RTE were having contractual problems with Sky. Here is her reply;

"There have been considerable contractural difficulties between RTE and Sky
resulting in the fact that for the moment it is necessary to tune in
manually. I am still awaiting this from the company but as soon as it comes
to hand I will pass it to you."

Looks like Sky are playing their usual games.

I wonder if Sky will use Radio 1's EPG placing as a pawn to get RTE TV on to SkyDigital?

"I wonder if Sky will use Radio 1's EPG placing as a pawn to get RTE TV on to SkyDigital?"

Doubtful. At least on RTÉ's part it's not *vital* to have the channel on the EPG - they may be happy not to leave it in Other Channels as long as it's available. I can't help wondering exactly what is holding things up, but it's probably over EPG costs again (isn't it always?!) Sky aren't desperate for Radio 1 in any way, so it'd just annoy RTÉ really and may serve to sour RTÉ's relationship with Sky for future negotiations. If I were one of TPTB at Sky, I'd make its first dealings with RTÉ (outside Tara, which was probably represented separately anyway) as smooth as possible. I certainly wouldn't put obstacles in RTÉ's way and give the impression adding channels to SkyD was fraught with hassle. As far as I'm concerned, any delay doesn't bode well for RTÉ television channels on Sky any time soon.

Let's just hope the talks with C4, C5 and the BBC for the remaining services are going more smoothly!

Check out <!--EZCODE AUTOLINK START--><a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/reception/images/BBC2_nations.gif&quot; OLDREF="">www.bbc.co.uk/reception/i...ations.gif</a><!--EZCODE AUTOLINK END--> to see how the BBC view Ireland's legal reception of BBC ONE NI and BBC TWO NI these days! The (soon) could be taken to be very encouraging, but it probably only means BBC2! It seems (unfortunately! - see Q in Eire thread) that the offical term for our viewing tier is the "Sky Eire Family Pack" as well.

The graphic seems to be specifically referring to digital, but from BBC-originated comments in the past, it does seem they don't like to admit those means exist, despite signing agreements with MMDS and cable. You hear little about the BBCs availability in Belgium and The Netherlands as well where they're available on cable. If you were to enquire about reception there, they'd likely direct you to BBC World and Prime.

On a similar, but unrelated note, I spoke to someone at Sky today who again assures me negotiations are ongoing with Channel 4 and 5 and with the BBC for the remaining digital channels (although I got the impression these were being given less of a priority.) Just goes to show how keeping up the pressure on Sky and the other companies is having the result of keeping the issue fairly high up the agenda.

    Stuart, thanks for the link.

Couple of things stand out -
"hit the Orange coloured button on your remote control and a tick will appear next to 'RTÉ Radio 1' on your television screen."

OK, so it's not as obvious as it might be, but given that the remote is based on teletext use, this is YELLOW not orange! They can be forgiven for just looking at it and thinking it's orange, but a little thought would have listed it as yellow, I think.

"RTÉ will shortly be available as a channel in its own right on the Sky Digital EPG (Electronic Programme Guide). Keep checking for this by selecting 'TV Guide' on the remote control and selecting menu item 7 'MUSIC ' Radio' using the down key and look out for RTRTÉ Radio 1."

I hope that "RTRTÉ" is a typo! When the transmissions first started the test was flagged "RTeRTeRTÉ" for some reason!

"The entire RTÉ Radio 1 output is relayed live on (Brussels) +0032 2 509 50 50. This number can be dialled from anywhere in the world."

Is this service relayed to Brussels so European Editor Tommy Gorman can check in for a local call?
