Has anyone here with a multi-sat system been able to receiver Tara on Intelsat 601?

MTA (analogue) is fine, but so far I've had no luck with Tara, although reception does seem to be possible in the UK according to posts on alt.satellite.tv.europe.

Someone on the east coast may have a better chance.

You'll need at least a 90cm dish but a 1.2m dish would be more likely to get a signal on Tara. RTE also have feeds on Intelsat 601 but these are likely to be encrypted.

The low symbol rate for Tara would explain why the picture gets blocky during rapid movement. Sky use Intelsat 601 as the source of their Tara signal.

I've been watching the Irish Masters Snooker on Tara via Sky and the blocky picture is particularly noticeable during sports events.

I wrote to the previous managing director of Tara a couple of years ago about Tara's picture quality and was told in his reply that they had no plans then to increase the symbol rate on Intelsat.

We have a 2.4M dish and are located in the south west. No joy though.

What countries or area does the primary footprint of Intelsat 601 cover. Although TARA is aimed primarily at the UK, can people in other countries pick it up with reasonable size dishes? Another question - why does RTE uplink TARA to Intelsat 601, instead of direct up to Astra 2D?

hi, The resaon it is not uplinked directly is because each transponder transmits several channels so tara has to be mixed (or multiplexed) with the other channels before it is uplinked. I believe that The new eutelsat satellites do have this facility to multiplex on board the satellite.

    Regards Tony
