    Whats the state of play today?

    Is it still the same as yesterday for BBC 1 NI; 1/2 hour unencrypted, other times not?
    Any more channels added?

    I know it is only on test, this must be a way of gradually introducing the service. But when it does appear fully on the EPG, I for one will be doing cartwheels.
    When/if BBC News 24 appears, I'll be wanting to see the ABC World News with Peter Jennings. That means all top 3 american channels' news porgrammes will be available to me.
    Tom Brokaw still wins, tho <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :) --><img src="../www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/smile.gif" ALT=":)" OLDREF="http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/smile.gif"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END-->

    Does anyone rather want to watch CNBC than National Geographic? (on NTL) I for one would. Cant stand the channel <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :( --><img src="../www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/frown.gif" ALT=":(" OLDREF="http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/frown.gif"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END-->

    It seems BBC1 & BBC2 is all we'll get. There will not be BBCnews24, BBCchoice, BBCknowledge according to the report by ICDG today. I think it's rite too coz when bbc emailed a response to me, they only mentioned BBC1+2. Ah,well. Be worse if it were vice versa. God, can't wait until Apr1! <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :hat --><img src="../www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/pimp.gif" ALT=":hat" OLDREF="http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/pimp.gif"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END-->

    On the reverse of that, that's the first that I have heard that the extra BBC channels were not becoming available.
    Ronan, where did you get that info??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 166,026 ✭✭✭✭LegacyUser

    Who's Ronan? I'm Will if you were refering to me. Check out todays news on ICDG site to see what i was on about. I think they could be on the right track coz neither BBC or Sky said we would get these channs. We just assumed! I would like News24 and Knowledge tho. Also would like C4 and C5 but no word of them coming on at all! Grrrr! <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :hat --><img src="../www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/pimp.gif" ALT=":hat" OLDREF="http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/pimp.gif"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END-->

    Hi Will <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :) --><img src="../www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/smile.gif" ALT=":)" OLDREF="http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/smile.gif"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END-->
    Ronan is the owner of the ICDG site, and what a great site and forum the guy has. Well done <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :) --><img src="../www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/smile.gif" ALT=":)" OLDREF="http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/smile.gif"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END-->
    Assumptions, true.... but if its only BBC 1 and 2 we are getting, then I am no better off than I was before. I, naturally thru the lie of the land, get BBC 1 and 2 from Divis, although having it clearer is a bonus, I wanted, more than anything, News 24.
    I will be right royally peeed off if I dont see it. <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :( --><img src="../www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/frown.gif" ALT=":(" OLDREF="http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/frown.gif"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END-->
    Channel 4 and 5 I can live without for the time being.

    Ah so Ronan is ICDG! Great site & forums Ronan! I too would like the above channels. I kinda have BBC1+2 (snowy) and had BBC1ni Digital on this morning to check out the differences between the 2. The picture obviously was one major difference for me and it is nice to see the black bars @ top&bottom of screen gone on digital. The sound was also significantly better. One channel i cannot get at all is Channel 4 so i would really like to see it appear but i will have to wait a wee bit longer it seems. U may have to make do with watching News24 on late night BBC1! <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :hat --><img src="../www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/pimp.gif" ALT=":hat" OLDREF="http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/pimp.gif"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END-->

    I have the bug for News 24, cos I watch it in at work every day. I work for a certain ISP, and for 15 minutes every hour, News 24 is played out live (then that 15 mins is repeated for the rest of the hour. It's good to catch a long countdown sometimes, mostly only 10 second jobbies. Its available from <!--EZCODE AUTOLINK START--><a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/&quot; OLDREF="">news.bbc.co.uk/</a><!--EZCODE AUTOLINK END--> and click on "BBC News 24 Bulletin".

    If News 24 is not going to appear, then why not BBC World? I know BBC World does not appear naturally on Sky Digital, but if News 24 is aimed solely at a UK audience, then we'll be the only place in the world who does'nt get a 24 hour BBC News channel. BBC World would be advantagous for the BBC to broadcast to the ROI, cos its the BBC with ads. but that wont happen, as the BBC would have to encrypt the channel for UK audiences, cos they should'nt be watching a BBC channel with ads! It would be very hard and pointless to do, because the target audience is so small (only ROI)I dont think we would mind having BBC World, ads and all *that* much.

    I just want a BBC News channel. N24 preferably, but I'd take BBC World no problem.

    Which raises another question. Radio 5 Live is encrypted on Sky Digital. Please????? (its available on NTL again, after a month away in September!)

    Damien. <!--EZCODE AUTOLINK START--><a href="http://www.iol.ie/~teilifis/&quot; OLDREF="">www.iol.ie/~teilifis/</a><!--EZCODE AUTOLINK END--> (and I don't work for IOL/Esat <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :) --><img src="../www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/smile.gif" ALT=":)" OLDREF="http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/smile.gif"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END-->

    take care

    Hi all,

    I very much doubt whether any programmes will be blocked on the BBC. Surely if this happened the cable companies would have to do the same thing? Remember fewer people will be watching on satellite. RTE may block programmes in the North, but there wasn't already someone there sending RTE, at least not officially (if your discount overbroadcasting).

    It also occurs to me that it will be interesting to see if/how much Sky will increase prices to cover copyright payments. Maybe we have been too harsh on Chorus/NTL on value for money. If there weren't paying copyright fees to the BBC/C4 maybe they would have had a much bigger selection of channels!!

    Best regards,
    John McD.

    I remember some years back, that Cabelink had some copyright issues with the UK terrestrial channels. This was sorted out and we got a price hike then, although I think it was very little.

    I cannot believe that NTL who have hundreds of thousands of customers here, would get away with paying no royalties when Sky have comparitivly few subscribers would have to pay extra.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 166,026 ✭✭✭✭LegacyUser

    There will be a few programmes blocked by the BBC. The reason that all programmes were/are available on other platforms is because it was more difficult to block them. Certainly the BBC couldn't block them directly as that would have affected domestic UK broadcasts. I hope there isn't a price hike, though since Sky have an interest in having ONE/TWO available, hopefully the increased business they will get will make up for the copyright they have to pay. Also bear in mind that the BBC has probably only sold Eastenders to RTE for terrestrial rights - they may still retain the DSat rights to it in Ireland. I won't be surprised if News 24 isn't available - Sky really don't like this channel and want to see it closed down.

    You have a point there Richard, cos Sky News has Irish ads, they would hate to see News 24 for Irish viewers, since they get 2 million per annum from Irish advertising. <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :( --><img src="../www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/frown.gif" ALT=":(" OLDREF="http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/frown.gif"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END-->

    Any news ?, or was it just a technical fault that we got clear BBC for the last 2 days, nothing at all in the clear today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 166,026 ✭✭✭✭LegacyUser

    Still no sign of any testing today.

    I have to say, with all the rumours of missing programmes and no Choice, Knowledge or News 24, the prospect of BBC on sky is looking less and less attractive. I already have BBC 1 and 2 (NI) on NTL and the was quite excited about the possibility of see the other Beeb channels and digital teletext.

    If it's a case of a restricted BBC 1 and 2 with a price increase, I'd rather not have them. The question is - will I be given a choice of not receiving them if they're going to cost more ?

    I should have made it more clear. I was summerising the current state of speculation. Nothing has been offically confirmed yet, so its possible Choice, Knowledge, News 24 et al could be available too.

    Mind you, two of these channels are closing in the next twelve months to be replaced by BBC3/4. And Choice NI is apparently closing next Friday.
