i got an email back from sky after i asked them about channel 5 being on analogue and not digital. they said they were in negotiations with the various broadcasters and i also emailed S4C (for the weekly rugby matches) and they said the couldn't broadcast in ROI for broadcasting reasons and they asked me to contact them again in May as all this could change. so there may be some truth in all this. i hope so because i am sick of the reception i am getting from the deflector

Maybe Chance after all....
Leesider, the comments I made about your sources were not meant to be taken personally, and it was nice to see a little "Action" happening on the board.
Its also nice to see a forum dedicated to all things in the wide world of telly from an irish point of view.
And yes the ICDG site itself is excellent. Very Informative.
Any further update Leesider on the BBC thingy?????
I can pick up County Sound Radio where I live perhaps I may listen to it sometime. 96FM and County Sound are the same right?????

Hi everybody

Just a word on the way this thread has gone - please keep it civil - no personal attacks on anyone. I think Leesider has now put everything on the record, so lets have that particular piece closed...we can only wait until the end of the month and see what happens. I personally have no doubt that the BBC will be on Sky eventually, its only a question of when. Sky themselves have publiclly come out and said that they are "in negiotations" - if the SBPost story was not true, I'm sure Damien Kiberd would be sued by Sky...

Thanks to everyone who's said kind words about the site BTW!

Thanks for the clarification, Tanya. For a moment, I thought I might have to hire some protection (LOL)!
No updates today, but I did notice a reply from Willie Fagan (Chorus boss) in today's Examiner. He pointed out that Chorus provide terrestrial channels, unlike Sky Digital. He also admitted that while there were some problems (Chorus inherited old cable networks all over the country which required significant upgrading), and they've pumped £300 million into the system so far. Consumers expectations will not only be met, they will be surpassed, he claims. Hmmm.

On the subject of test channels, there's one on at the moment called Skktest, which is the UK version of Sky News (ie showing UK ad breaks as opposed to the ones we get - ironically advertising Chorus all the time).
Can we expect any new channels when the Eurobird satellite finally launches on March 8th?

Also received a new flyer from Chorus today, stating that if you subscribe to their digital service, take the phone offer also, you can avail of a special offer of an extra connection (analogue black box) for only £5 a month, so 'everyone can watch what they want, when they want'.

Euronews is the only channel i have heard of on Eurobird so far. we should have it in April. on another forum i read of the possibility of 4 digiboxes in 1 home. how much extra though who knows. it may not be true but it would be nice.

From what I hear, and I hear a lot as I install skydigital, the new astra (2D or something) is starting trasmission from 1 april. apparently, UK terrestrial tv will be moved onto this and accordingly, ROI could receive the UK Terrestrials. 2D is sposed to have a smaller footprint, covering only UK and IRL. I dont know if it's true that UK terrs will b available here. Rumours galore!!

I sure as hell hope you're right as i have Digital and 'deflected' terrestrial BBC (which is unwatchable) and it would b nice But, I work at installing SkyDigital and neither I nor the 'boss' have heard anything from Sky or Armstrong Electronics (our sky equipment suppliers) on the subject. If ur rite, I will be flat out again, coz here in Donegal, UKTV is rubbish poor (and RTÉ in places) so Sky would sell by the pallet load!

again Eurobird is mentioned. I know that I have to set MiniDishes to 28.2 degrees East. Eurobird is 28.5 degrees East. I know it is a small difference but still it could be enough for it not to work. What about the Dish elevation setup etc? I hope ur rite tho as some xtra channels would b nice!

It is possible to connect up to 4 digiboxes to one dish but you would need a 4-way LNB, 4 digibox receivers and even 4 cards! if u have only 1 card and intend swapping it all the time you could only watch SkyFamilyPack. if you have subscribed to Sky Movies or Sky Sports, you could only watch them on the receiver the card was activated on.

So we have a Sky digital installer on the Forum....
Welcome....
So far it is looking that I will have to issue a very public apology to leesider if this is true.

Tommy of Electroplus Satellite Dublin. Tells me today that BBC will launch on Monday 12th March 2001 . Yes you have this is from a man in the know! I won't hold my breath. Because RTE for one will block any attempt by Sky to launch BBC etc in Eire because it will f**k up their advertising and once RTE get Sky into an Irish court your talking year's & year's of legal wrangle between the "State" i.e. RTE and the British Broadcaster. Don't think for one moment that the state will leave them in without a fight and this will probably be resolved in European court which takes donkeys years. People get a life, no BBC in Ireland from the Sky Digital Platform for many a year to come. And if CH4 & CH5 go free to air on the ASTRA 2D narrow beam satellite BBC will not.

If the BBC come on Sky in the Republic on April 1st I will have a special meal.

It is a an old felt hat purchased in Clerys at some point in the 1980s when I was wrongly convinced that it was a cool thing to have.

Could anyone suggest a decent wine to go with a hat?

Leesider is smiling. Sky Installers, Electroplus, all confirming the rumour
I will issue the apology IF it happens
Anyhow, maybe Richard Logue may enjoy a nice Chilean red with the hat he bought in Clearys.
BBC 1 from April 1st and now we hear March 12th.
well ?

to clarify things, what I heard is only rumours, not official so everyone could be entirely wrong! I do know that a few months ago, there was one day where if I installed sky, BBC would pop up on EPG and worked fine. BUT, it only lasted around 24hours and then disappeared! and on the icdg site, it sez that if UKterrestrials move to Astra2D, we may get bbc2, c4 and c5 but mebbe not bbc1 coz of regional variations. As for March 12, that would really b nice!! BTW, can anyone get any EuroBird channels on sky?? if so, gimme some freqs

Check out : www.lyngsat.com
Excellent site with frequencies for all satellites.
Check out the 28 degrees slot, and you can get all the frequencies for Astra which Sky broadcasts on, in addition to others.
Also try the lyngsat section for eurobird:
www.lyngsat.com/eurobird.

The official website for eurobird is:
www.eurobird.org
Hoe that helps..........

thanx tanya 4 the info. have just been to lyngsat site. still dunno if my sky dish can pick up eurobird.

I checked the footprints of the new eurobird satellite, and if I am correct, only viewers on the East Coast and midlands will only be able to receive SOME of the channels.
Check the footprint yourself, and the NW beam covers the entire UK, and parts of ROI as mentioned above.
As you are a Sky Installer, why not ask a collegue if a bigger dish might improve the chances of reception of Eurobird....
Just checked another forum..(THOIC) which deals with mostly the technical end of Sky Digital. One of the threads on that site was written by another Sky Installer from Dublin and he too stated that BBC would be on Sky ROI. However he said the date was June!!!!!!!!
Rumours abound.......
By the way Leesider, I telephoned the satellite installer you mentioned in Cork this afternoon (Saturday). You were kind enough to post the telephone number. The woman who answered the telephone, informed me that BBC would be on Sky on the first week in April. She added that she was 85% sure that it would be on. I later phoned Sky on their 1800 number and was told by an C/S agent(they are always polite at Sky) that Sky were in negotions with the british channels and they would not "Comment any further".....
So we know they are in negotations as reported by ICDG and Sunday Business post, and its only a matter of how these talks work out..................

March 12th would be great seeing as it is only 2 days away. why would RTÉ go to court over this seeing that they had a stake in Cablelink which provided BBC, CH4 etc.

• Registered Users Posts: 166,026 ✭✭✭✭LegacyUser

looking at the footprint the line goes right over my house. fingers crossed
