Just to let NTL viewers know that the list of regions to get Digitalplus "by September" is now available on the ODTR website and will be up on ICDG tommorow.

It appears they are now definitely going to use the ex-Cablelink network for digital TV, meaning anything interactive is out, plus no cable modem service.

    from today's 'Examiner'.....

Irish Examiner - News From Ireland - 31, March,
    By Ian Guider

NTL could lose their licence if they do not deliver on new deadlines for rolling out digital television.
Telecoms regulator Etain Doyle said she would take any action she considered necessary to ensure Ntl met their licence requirements.
Following a lengthy review of its Irish operations, Ntl yesterday gave up on immediate plans to build a new cable network to run digital television, high speed internet and telephone services.
Ntl could face the loss of their telecoms licence or penalties if they miss the revised deadlines. Under the terms of its franchise, Ntl was required to provide full bundled services to 100,000 homes, or 30% of its customers by today. Only 36,000 homes have been upgraded and less than half of them have signed up to the service.
The regulator yesterday agreed Ntl would offer digital television to 100,000 homes by September, over the existing cable network. Digital television will only be made available to home in Waterford, Galway and certain areas of Dublin.
In January, Ntl, which bought Cablelink nearly two years ago, suspended the upgrade of its cable network in Galway, Waterford and Dublin to conduct the business review.
With the price of relaying cables across the country running into hundreds of millions Ntl topped all work, but denied they were prepared to pull out of Ireland. New Ntl managing director Brian Moore stressed the company was not selling and denied it was providing a poor substitute. “I would like to reiterate our absolute commitment to this market. We will also devote extra resources this year to ensure the quality of more problematic parts of our networks is improved to meet our customer and regulatory expectations.”

I should re-iterate at this point that all the newspapers have got in wrong - NTL do not have to actually provide the service to 100,000 customer, just have OFFERED and be able to connect the service to 100,000 customers should they request it. The same goes for Chorus's rollout targets.

Of course, NTL have broken even this licence obligation. But hopefully this news will see things being put right - even if it will be an inferior service.

If this is so, where do chorus stand in relation to this point? It seems to me to be a position of many promises, but little delivery in terms of digital customers. Remember the fire at their hq-reference was made to 3000 digital subscribers! Even fewer that ntl!
    Any thoughts on this?
