Irish adverts not on Sky via Chorus!!

    Hi,

When I started reading this forum, people were talking about Sky inserting Irish adds on the transmissions to Ireland on Sky channels. I never noticed this myself but figured I must have just missed it on Chorus.

Now I have Sky Digital, and still have Chorus for 2 more weeks and have found that Chorus is transmitting the UK ads while DSAT is indeed sending Irish ads!!! How can this be? Where is their feed coming from?! Surely Sky should be complaining about this, as they could charge more if they were able to say all cable customers were getting such ads!!

Also, the DSAT feed is about 1 second delayed from the Chorus feed, so Chorus must not be getting it via satellite? Or could the digibox be inserting such a delay?

    What's going on?!

    John McD.

Most Chorus regions are now carrying Sky Irish versions.

There is a simple way to check where the feed is coming from. Go to Sky One and press text.

    (A) If the text appeares, and the service id is "SKY ONE", this is Analogue Astra.

    (A) If text appears, and service id is "Sky Text" this is SkyDigital UK with UK adverts.

    (B) If no text appears, except for "Tune to Sky News" message, and service id is "SKY 1 EIRE", this is SkyDigital Ireland with Irish adverts.

I've just check Sky One on Chorus. It is showing SKY ONE, so must still be the analogue feed. God bless Chorus for sticking with the tried and tested analogue technology.

Can Chorus users in various parts of the country post here what feed of Sky One they are seeing?

Please mention your region / former company (prior to introduction of Chorus or Irish Multichannel) and platform (cable/MMDS) when doing so.

I know ex-Horizon MMDS was showing the SkyDigital Ireland feed at Christmas-time anyway.

I have both Chorus and Sky digital.
I live in an ex-Suir/Nore region, and Chorus mmds here broadcasts Sky News & Sky One WITH irish adverts.
However the British ads were showing up until Jan.
The Chorus region where I live is NOT digital.
For some strange reason SkySports 1,2,3,and Sky premier are in the clear,(On Chorus) which means I can assign them a dedicated channel on my TV.

In reply to the "Second Delay" article posted above, you can still tune manually Sky News for the UK on the Sky Digibox.
While watching it(Manual tune), if you press 501 for sky news, there is again a very small delay, which means that Sky are slowing the Irish feed for the inclusion of ads.
I did notice this delay also, when Sky were doing test transmissions of BBC1 last week. I was comparing the picture quality between Chorus BBC1 and Sky BBC1, and again a delay, except this time it was on chorus.
Anyhow probally proves that Chorus relay BBC1(ni) from Sky Digital in the first place.

Switching to teletext, to get the 'SKY 1 EIRE' to appear you have to page up or down to see it at the top of the screen. You will also see that the time and date are incorrect (still).

Chorus MMDS in Cork started taking the Irish Sky1 version just before X-mas.

The analogue signal (with UK ads) is on the cable system in Cork city.

    Hi all,

Actually my Sky 1 teletext on chorus is so garbled that I can't make out what it is(though it's definitely not saying switch to news). However I would guess it's the analogue feed, as I'm just outside Cork city, near Douglas, and Shane probably gets the same feed as me. And I know it sends the UK ads.

For the record it used to be Cork multichannel.

    Best regards,
    John.

Chorus' analogue cable service in Celbridge is carrying feeds from DSat, but it's Sky One and Sky News are being taken from the standard UK service..point of fact, the Sky channels are prone to freezing, and Sky One for the last two days is showing a blue DSat information card, telling the viewer that there is a problem with their card.

What's that sound? Why, it's a clock ticking loudly telling me it's time to junk Chorus and get Sky.

To tell whether Chorus are using a SkyDigital feed for BBC ONE - watch a widescreen programme (most are, the news is, anyway). If it appears in 14:9 "shallow" letterbox then the feed is off analogue, if it fills the screen (and chops mmore of the sides to achieve this) then it is a SkyDigital feed.

To check BBC TWO - check Ceefax - it is currently a generic UK version, not NI-specific (check p160)

What is Chorus Digital really like. Is it good value?
If you could give us a detailed review it would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Well, I started this thread a few days ago when I noticed the difference between DSAT and Chorus, but last night Chorus were showing the same ads, so I think they have just switched to a DSAT feed.

I have stayed whit C/d because iwant thear phone as Idont have eircom. Plus they have BBC RTE etc. The picture is good Sometimes it freezes on 4 channels. They have told me ther is a problem whit transponder 6 Wstcork transmitter. They have given the whole service 65 channels including PayPV for the basic price of £18.95 as compansation for this problem so theyve told me on the phone. Full price £44. Iam qiute pleased overall as i have adecent RTE picture at long last.I will speak more soon.

    Thanks for the reply.
As you mentioned, you will be writing more soon. However I would appreciate a detailed list of stations that you are getting. Am I correct is saying that you are only getting Ch4 and UTV that are not (Yet) on sky??

    Hi Big Tanya,
a friend of mine has Chorus Digital, and I have played around with the remote a few times. While it's a significant improvement on their analogue service, I still prefer Sky Digital. I have to say, though, that UTV and Channel 4 have impeccable picture quality. Their EPG is certainly different to Sky's. They have a 'now and next' section, displaying what is on the various channels (you can scroll down page by page, hence the first page has RTE1 up to Channel 4), and you can select a programme to view.
There is also a channel which shows an on-screen demonstration on how to 'navigate ' the remote control, which looks quite professional, which is a word I wouldn't use very often for Chorus.
Changing from one channel to another, however, makes the picture jump a bit, and freezing seems to occur on Channel 4 for some reason (software problems, we are told).
One of the girls I work with has had her Chorus digital box replaced 3 times since Christmas, once the sound disappeared, and then it stuck on standby. The phone service has been intermittent as well.
I've heard mixed reports, I'd say 70% dodgy, and 30% pleased. Everone I know that has the service still have all PPV channels for free, for the last 2 months. It must be some kind of promotion.
I'm really pleased I changed over to Sky. No more blank screens and useless customer service.
I've had lots of people ask me about BBC on Sky, who are currently subscribing to Chorus, but won't be for much longer.
By the way, the Evening Echo in Cork is now carrying adverts for Sky Digital, with the added text 'BBC Channels now available on Sky'.

On Chorus Digital - are the BBC1/2/UTV/C4 pictures digitally sourced? or are they off an analogue feed. Basically, are these channels in anamorphic widescreen (not all the time, but most of hte time on BBC channels)

I think bbc/utv/c4 may come from On digital in the north because when i had analouge in the last 4 months i had it. The picture would have the odd cube like break up. Maybe they were delivering the norths analouge signal via digital between thear transmitters to west cork? Tanya RTE bbc2 utv C4 tv3 tg4 are the only extra channels. I wonder why no bbc choice news 24 etc. If idont get the Chorus phone soon i shall get sky. I do prefer Chorus giude to sky giude. When you press NOW the OSD apears with a red time bar this is qiute good. Press up/down shows you now/next while viewing same channel. Time bars also apear on theC/giude like egg timers yellow on blue. Leesider have you seen Uk gold on your mates system. Not available in west cork due to soft ware problem. Is SOFT WARE PROBLEM! a new CHORUS bluff.
