Last August i started private lessons for the piano and I have my first grade exam next month ... I will be sitting grade 3

What I am looking for is peoples comments on these exams.

I know i have to do 3 pieces, scales, arpegios (sp?) and a sight reading test.

Does anyone know how these are marked ? The value of each ...ie: if i fluck up the sight reading but ace the 3 pieces will i be ok ?

Any comments or advice would be appreciated

I don't play piano, but i'm sure the same things applies for any instrument.
I only ever sat one exam. It was grade 3 guitar. I was able to play my 3 pieces perfectly, i could play all my scales, arpeggios etc. The listening tests were fine. But i was terrible at sight-reading. I still got a distinction, 90 or 91. I can't remember.
Anyway, my point is this. The sight-reading only counts for 10 marks. Grade 3 isn't a high grade so they won't be expecting a really high standard of sight-reading. Take your time with it. If you make a mistake, just ask can you play it again. I think i was allowed play my sight-reading part 3 times and even then i didn't get 0 for it. So, basically i wouldn't worry too much about the sight-reading. If the exam is coming up soon, you're not really going to be able to improve your sight-reading all that much but you can definitely improve your 3 pieces.

    Good luck.

It depends on which you do associated board or Irish academy
I did a few AB ones they are out of 150, and sightreading is 18, scales 21, aural theory stuff 21, and 3 x 30 for pieces.
    100 is a pass
Academy is a fair bit easier but is out of 100 in about the same ratios
