Almost Every Moderator on here supports the Zionist and Israeli-Lobby Position.

Beats being called a nazi I guess. :)

Maybe we should have a survey?

    What ism are you?!

    1. Loyalism
    2. Republicanism
    3. Zionism
    4. Palestinism
    5. Nazism
    6. Atarijaguarism
    7. Kittencakism
    8. Boardism
    9. Freemasonism (heh)
    10. Surveyism

It'd have to be multi-choice of course so that some of our more radical mods could reflect their schizophrenia properly.

I prefer not to define myself myself by the groups I consider myself allied to...

If I say I am a Socialist then I neatly put all sorts of preconceptions into your head about me.

If I say I am a Catholic, born in Belfast that too puts me in a box in most peoples minds.

Both would be incorrect conclusions to jump too, though both are factually correct.

There *are* other admins too... I mean...we're not a hedgemony here, in fact we have fairly different alliegances so I doubt we could act in unison apart from maybe in relation to Boards.... and even then not always!

so disestablishmentarianism was against the monarchy, and antidisestablishmentarianism, was against those against the monarchy.

    From OED 2e:
disestablishmentarian, an adherent of disestablishment (also attrib. or adj.).
1885 Times 4 Dec. 3/4, I have just recorded my vote against the disestablishmentarian.
1885 Guardian 2 Dec. 1815/1 The 480 Disestablishmentarian candidates have considerably dwindled through explanations and rejections.
    antidisestablishmentarianism.
    [f. anti-1 + disestablishmentarian + -ism.]
Properly, opposition to the disestablishment of the Church of England (rare): but popularly cited as an example of a long word. So
    antidisestablishmentarian.
1900 N. & Q. 25 Aug. 147/1 In the recent biography of Dr. Benson is an entry from the Archbishop's diary to the effect that _the Free Kirk of the North of Scotland are strong antidisestablishmentarians'.
1923 in Brewer's Dict. Phr. & Fable (new ed.) s.v. Long words.
1960 Amrita Bazar Patrika 17 June 6/4 But then _Antidisestablishmentarianism' contains three more letters, as pointed out by two readers.
1984 T. Augarde Oxf. Guide Word Games xxvi. 216 The longest words that most people know are antidisestablishmentarianism_and supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

The Disestablishmentarians wanted the church of England to be disestablished (ie - the monarchy to be removed from being the titular head of the church and the monarchy and Parliament to drop their involvement in the politics of the church (appointing bishops and so on) leading the C of E to be regarded as the 'official' church no longer). The Anti-Disestablishmentarians wanted the status in quo to remain and were set up as a reactionary organisation to the former. Either way the monarchy would continue to exist - the argument was over whether Queen Vic really should be appointing people as bishops merely because she liked the cut of their gaiters.

(the dates above are the earliest references found in print - sharp-eyed Blackadder watchers will realise that Thicky Prince George wouldn't have been stuck saying anti-distinctly-minty for three days then)

This idea of "disestablishmentarianism" meaning someone opposed to any established order is news to me (and to dictionary.com - they don't give any reference to this broader meaning at all) so unless we decide to broaden the meaning of the word (and we can - all we have to do is start using it so) it probably still just applies to the C of E.

(and this post is probably a perfect example of the off-topic posts that DeV wants gone. Apologies etc)

    Dictionary.com knows nothing of antidisestablishmentarianism.

So anyway, Eamos not going to be getting any for a while now... is that going to make him even crankier then usual?? :p

Sorry to keep going off topic but...
The reason dictionary.com doesn't show antidisestblahblahblah is because it doesnt include prefix anti- and post-fix (Im sure those words are wrong) -ism. Look here.

Happy Birthday Eamon! May you have pie.

Oh, and the longest word I thought was floccinoccinihilipilification. I could have the wrong spelling.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,738 ✭✭✭Barry Aldwell

Floccinoccinihilipilification (I don't know the correct spelling, and even google hasn't heard of it, but it means to calculate as zero) is the longest dictionary word. And it's prefix and suffix.

Hey this is a great thread for that new spangly board over there in Admin - "Feedback".

We could even award the quote of the "month" at an awards ceremony and put it into the "Boards Awards" bit! :p

Thanks for the info Barry, I thought it was a socialism term on population. (I presume that comes from Latin root as opposed to Greek?)
    anywho..
