Ok i have played plenty of AOE 1 in my time but never the sequel and I have a challenge coming up!!!

I'm not looking far a critical review of the game, just some pointers...

    1) Who is the best race to begin with! the best defensive race
    2) Any tips for the early game - Dos and Don'ts :D
    3) Any nasty multiplayer tactics?

    Any help lads!

If you have the conquerers expansion, take Teutons, the ultimate at defence, their castles have 11+5 (yes, 5!!!) range, same range as a Trebuchet unless they have siege engineers, and you can garrison 10 men in their towers ranther than just 5 (but i always build castles instead because their tougher). Early game the best tactic seems to build LOADS of villigers (50 or so), about 10 in the 1st age, another 30 in the 2nd age, and then another 10 in the last age, the more villagers the more resources, more resources means more military. A good tactic early on is build roughly 150 villigars (get these up before the 4th age) and then later on when its time to start the major assaults (of 100+ men) kill off 50 or so, they will have made their value 10 times over, however this only works on maps with a lot of resources (such as black forest, LOTs of wood, and wood mean farms, means food, then you can sell for gold and buy stone). Also, never leave your base open to trebuchets, a tactic I often use is put a space between your castles and the wall outside you base, and put a wall (3 per castle or so) of trebuchets between the wall and castle, due to their huge pierce resist archers will do nothing against them, and it allows them to defend your castle from enemy trebuchets without needing to send out a mobile military, however this can be stopped if the enemy also has siege engineers (this research is very important btw, try to pick a team with it) then they can kill your walls without needing to get hit by your trebuchets, however forcefiring infront of him can sort him out due to the scatter of the weapon. Also, have one villager at each large defence post for repairing the castle and trebuchets, and maybe put up another tower, or bombard tower. If you dont have the conquerers expansion always put one of 2 bombard towers at a defence line, their the only thing you have against rams, kill them in a handful of shots, castles/towers can do **** against rams tho.

however: these tactics have been based on an off-line game, as I have only played on-line once, so dont rely on these and if someone who is an on-line vet could rip up this tactic and improve it please do.

im not too familiar with AOE2 but im convinced the trick to all online RTS is to be aggressive rather than defensive and try to harass your opponent while teching yourself etc.

about races and build orders and stuff im sure you could google up tactics

Pugsley is spot on, although personally i prefer the byzantines for defence as the can head off an oncoming attack with their improved and cheaper counter-units before they can reach your more permanent defences.

but the main thing about aok is knowing your civ. back to front. no matter who you choose, you'll need to know how to exploit their advantages and play around their weaknesses. examples would be the celts, they can use their wood collecting bonus not only to build their all-powerfull siege weaponry but also to start fishing as early as possible bofore other civs could even think about launching a fleet.

there are loads of little expliots for every civ, the key is learning to use them to the maximum advantage and specialised in at least 3 civs for map diversity. if your match is a good bit away then pic a well rounded civ (i suggest the french or the celts) and practice Pugsley's villager strategy (which is spot on btw;) ) and you should get on fine

and if you want some practice just say so, id be up for a game:)

omfg, i was right? must be an error there, check your resources carbine, musta been a typo :D

However knowing the plan and executing it are 2 diffrent things, so I'd probably still get my arse handed to me in a tin bucket on-line :)

I suggest getting basic military early as possible and send them into the enemy(rushing). This will hinder their rate of growth and giving u more time to build up while they are dealing with your attack. Also, a good tactic in a large Black Forest map is to send one villager into the enemies territory and get a military up behind enemy lines, pisses them off.

Or if your enemy is very defensive early on wall every entrance to their base, lock them inside (in a 1v1) and then you have the whole map of resources to yourself while their locked away for annihalation after you have 40 paladins 40 musketeers and 40 of your special infantry (teutonic knights are great for base storming, insanely tough, huskarls arent bad either but that means goths, so only wooden walls)

Anyone that likes to go defensive and research technology whilst trying to build a military like myself will find that this will work against computer players but on the zone or wherever you're playing you'll find that that playing defensively is actually very hard to pull off because if you wall yourself on maps such as black forest the enemy will cut through the forest to get you and you will always be attacked before you can attack because of your walls, build gates is a dangerous way to go cause if its knocked they'll flood in.
