does Five broadcast in 14:9 on analogue because it has appeared through my aerial on ch 51 and i don't know if it's from a Sky box or from the UK

Channel 5 doesn't broadcast from any transmitter in the UK on Ch.51 - so it must be a digibox.

And yes, Five do use 14:9 on their analogue network.

    Hi Mossy,
if I remember correctly, you're in the Dungarvan area. Would that signal reach as far as Youghal (about 17 miles east)?
    Just curious.

i wouldn't have a clue as to how far the signal would reach to be honest

Leesider, the signal on Ch 51 that Mossy mentions certainly would not be receiveable in Youghal as a local RTE TV relay (one of the 2 serving the town) uses 51 for TG4. This is the Ferrypoint one which is just across the water (in Co. Waterford) from the town centre.

The 'deflector' which is receiveable in Youghal town would be South Coast's Comeragh Mts one (BBC2: 61, S4C: 64, HTV: 66, BBC1: 69, Vertical - Group C/D or wideband type UHF aerial) but for most viewers its a poorish signal according to people there I know.

Youghal in fact had its own dedicated 'deflector' situated at Carronadavderg (a mountain a few miles away in Co. Waterford - noticeable from the distance with its communications masts). This was set up in the mid-1980s by a Youghal TV dealer, but this closed down when MMDS was introduced to Youghal town (in 1992). When this closed its viewers who did not get MMDS had to make do with the weaker Comeragh signals (thats if they could get it considering other hills being in the way).

    PS
The southern edge of Youghal is a blackspot for TV signals from Co. Waterford. Your only hope there for 'deflector' would be Carrigaline (40,42,45,48 Horizontal Group B) but rather weak if receiveable at all.

Before deflectors people in Youghal (if suitably located) used to try and receive Caradon Hill from Cornwall (weather dependent). You can still see a few ancient huge Group As here and there.

I remember someone very well located on northside of Cork City claiming they had a watchable picture 50% of the year (from Caradon Hill) with one of those huge Group As (which they had before cable TV arrived in 1982).
