It seems like there is no hope.
A constant search and struggle for musicians has yet to result in anything good for me.

All I want is a decent band! Is there none in need of a guitarist?

What makes the search even more difficult is that I'm 16 and that there are rarely any decent bands around my age group ( i havent heard any yet anyway ) around so I have to get into bands with people older than me, which I don't have a problem with but the bands themselves often do.

Most people have only been playing their instruments a year or two when they are around the ages of 16 or 17...and without sounding big headed...they are usually not good enough because of this. So I pretty much have to be in a band with people around the ages of 19 or 20.

Any body else feel like they are in the same position as me? Or has been in the same position?

Calling people crap is not gonna help.
    To be honest,
I would have a problem with a 16 yr old in my band. For one what happens if we had a gig, and decided to go out drinking after! I'm not gonna be waiting around while mammy gives you a lift or whatever, or have to go to school the next morning and all that shit. If you're talented though, people would accept you, so you have to ask yourself this. ARE YOU ANY GOOD! You might think you are, but you could be rubbish and full of yourself, which happens alot. Just try putting ads up everywhere (like in Musicmaker or wherever in Dublin)
Getting yourself known to as many people locally can help aswell.

Nah....I was goin over board calling people crap. Just my way of getting peoples attention, sorry.

Secondly...I'm better than most guitarists twice my age. I know what sounds good...I know what talent is. Please don't think I'm a big headed ****er...because I'm not. I suppose the only way you'd ever know is if you were to hear me I suppose.

As for the 16 year old thing...don't stereotype. Maybe you were treated as childishly as that when you were 16, I am not.

Most of the time Im usually aiming for a band with members around 18 minimum...because most people my age have only been playing their instruments a year or two and are either crap or just very average.

I know all of this is making me come across as a know it all big headed ****er...but I know I'm not..I'm just stating the facts.

Any of the first bands I was in I was the youngest, one stage I was 15 and the rest of the band was from 18 - 20,didnt seem to matter,I picked up guitar pretty fast..ya know when you just find something that suits you..

That being said I still wouldnt think I started playing properly till 3 - 4 years ago, when I actully sat down learned my scales riffs, anything I could..if I couldnt I persisted until I could.

The band im in at the moment,is the first band Ive been in where someone is actully younger than me,and thats only by a year and a day..

I never got hassle in bands cause I was younger than everyone,no one gave a **** ,I did a good job .. was a decent musician, everything was kewl..,wouldnt bother me if there was a person in the band considerable younger, long as they could play and showed up on time..

There was only one band who didnt even want me to show up and audition because of my age before...their loss.

In my experience...you're right...people don't give two ****s about what age you are just as long as you're dedicated and can play well and can have a laugh with them.

I've been playing guitar since I was 9... and I'm one of these people that will sit down with a metanome and my guitar on a clean sound for 7 hours and not even notice the time go by,

I'm not looking for a band where I can play **** solo's all day but I am looking for one with capable dedicated musicians.

What I was tryin to say is that it's hard finding people like that...even harder with someone around the ages of say 18.

I dunno man, just takes a while to find the right kinda band with the right kinda people, playing the same stuff your into, wouldnt give up hope ya know.

You age gives you an advantage in a way,you got more time to try out more bands,so say yer still looking when your 18,you'll have shed loads of experience with audtions, personalities and other musicians.

    All the best

The last thing I'll be doing is not continuing to search.

And you're right bout having expererience with auditions and everything...but I RARELY even get a phone call or response to any ads I upt up anywhere....Ah...I dunno.

Next saturday I'll put up some fresh ads in town...see if anything happens

And I'm also goin to try out for this band...but I think they want someone over 18...we'll see.

Pauleeeeeee is a tosser IMO. Simply cos why do you have do in a band full of talented musicians?

If your so damn good you should be able to cover for the other "average" musicians and besides do you wanna be in a band so you can say "my band are brilliant musician.....etc,etc" so you can massage your ego or do you wanna be in a band for the

    ****ING MUSIC!!!!!!!

What the **** are you talking about?!
Firstly, would you prefare I was in a band with untalented musicians?!

Secondly...I don't define talent as being able to play solo's on drums or bass or being able to scream a note for 20 bars. Those things do help alot and add to the music of course but talent is being able to come up with good, creative, original material and have a certain degree of good technical ability (which will nearly always improve your ability to be more creative at your instrument)

Thirdly, your saying that if I'm a good musician...that means that I should be able to make the other crappy musician(s) in the band look better?

    Cop on.

Pantera are great. Why? Because they have:
    A: a GREAT vocalist
B: They have a GREAT drummer
C: They have a GREAT guitarist
D: they have a GREAT bassist

Tool are great. Why? Because they have:
    A: a GREAT vocalist
B: They have a GREAT drummer
C: They have a GREAT guitarist
D: they have a GREAT bassist

    And I could go on...

They don't just have this one member who's really talented holding the whole band together.

AAAAAAnyway...As I said, I CAN play solos and technical stuff very well BUT that is NOT what I wan't to play in a band!

I don't want musicians playing big huge complicated **** off riffs or beats on the drums...although as can be seen from the latest Queens of the stone age album it does help to have a drummer who can come up with that kind of stuff.

I admit that I came off sounding like a wanker in the first post I made on this topic ( I was in a pisser because I am searchin all over the place for a band looking for guitarist or some good musicians and nothings really happening). And please, don't be smart by saying ''maybe if you stopped being such a wanker with such high standards you'd find more people or more people would come to you'' coz I don't approach musicians or bands in the same way I'm talking right now.

He's got a point ,as in Paule..
You cant have a good band if your ****...common sense !

The band im in at the moment, the singer spent 2 years, yes 2 whole years looking for the right kind of people, and it wasnt as if there was a lack of musicians. He was looking for people with skill, who he could get along with, and who were reliable, badabing badaboom,we have a band where no member holds the band back, all four us can play well, and because we're 'capable musicians' we write songs fast, struture them well, and essientialy make decent music.

If your a good musician, and you wanna form a band with musicians with the same capabilities as you,why the hell not ?
Whats not kewl is ego's,there will allways be someone better than you *points to the sky* Jimi theres pretty good.

Roffle, you actually made me laugh, I'm hoping your not a big headed ****er cause with your head that far up your own ass it would probably be dangerous, what exactly make one so special?
Perhaps the concept of talent is lost on you??????????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 644 ✭✭✭Pauleeeeeeee

Cheers Nemisis.....and fair play to your singer. Is he any good?....theyre the hardest thing along with a good drummer to find I think.

Look...I know at this point that I probably look like a big headed ****er who thinks he's the best guitarist around.
I don't think that at all, I'm sure there ****in LOADS of guitarists around that are much better than me.

I'm good for my age though...and the hard part is finding someone along the same lines as me as far as creativity and talent go that are around the same age as me...which is probably a reason why I'm finding it so hard to find anyone.

SOL, if you had bothered you're arse to read this whole topic you would see what I define a talented musician as...what makes someone special.
If you think that my standards are too high in what I'm looking for...fair enough. But I don't, I just think I'm being realistic if I want to be in a successful band who create good music.

    my standards are too high
So do you actually play a real instrument aswell or would that be below your talented nature?
