anyone play the old rules still? personnally i love em', but cant find anyone to play. if this boards games day goes ahead maybe we could run a few games of it(that is if ppl know the rules, have the codex for the army and have a full dark millenium supplement :P)

i was also wondering if people think the new rules have ruined the game (hence the poll)

imo all that needed to be changed was the hth combat system, some of the jammy weapons(vortex grenades, hallucinogens for example) and get rid of overwatch.

Necromunda is what new 40k should be on a larger scale

Which do you prefer? 21 votes

i prefer the new rules , characters and wargear were overpowered and hth was fúcked up.

2nd edition rules work alot better in necromunda though , its on a smaller scale with no super characters

I prefared 2nd ed, the game had more depth, and the special charecters were actually powerful, in 3rd ed it isnt rare for a squad of Havocs to kill a bloodthirster in 1 or 2 turns. The new psychic powers also suck, no power in them, their just like a shooting attack except some of the eldar spells. And there really were true weapons of power (anyone who messed with a Vortex cannon needed their head checked or was dead, and if you meet a blood thirster your either god or a lucky wee fecker). 3rd ed too simple for me, not enough variation.

Overwatch - why did they take it away?

There was nothing more enjoyable than a squad of Dark Reapers on overwatch obliterating the Rhino that carried the comand group or whatever :)

Onne thing I do like about the new rules is that everyone has a chance - special characters no longer ruin small games (my brother was a fucker for them).

i have to agree with funky. 2nd ed rules were made for necromunda, they spoiled 40k games something feirce

but im also not happy with 3rd ed rules, i think they removed the chunkyness* from the game.

*the feeling of having your hands on something slightly too big for you.

I Prefer good old Rouge Trader (1st ed) and The Compendium and the like. If you think Characters were tooled up in 2nd ed then hah you know nothing.

1st ed was the busness, spesialy with things like the turning ratios for veichals and the do it your self guide to making a grav tank out of a showergel bottle and a plastic medicen spoon.

The reason 3 Ed came along was because 2 Ed was getting bloated down with rules. You had to make a bizillion dice rolls each turn. Characters were completely overpowered as well.

On the other hand, I do think they went a bit OTT with 3 Ed with regards of the dumbing down of it. I'd like more depth to the psychic rules again in particular.

Aye that's my biggest problem with 3rd ed. I have an Ork Warphead that gets no use anymore because he's just rubbish now! Used to be great, invoking the Foot Of Gork on my brother's Rhino, and I just couldn't say no to Kop Dis!, the funky Jedi pushing people over type power...

They realy did ruin the psychic, it used to have some huge psychic wars which could often turn the game, and gave eldar a something they truely acceled in (apart from being speedy 'n' weedy), but now their psychic is limited beyond belief, not even eldrad ulthran is much good anymore.

Might be an idea to splice the Dark Milennium pack with 3rd ed. with a few modifications, include a psychic phase, and see how that goes. Hell, I think I'll try it out!

I stopped playing 40k as soon as 3rd edition came out. i don't like the new rules at all. i used to be so content with my huge chaos army, but now i don't play at all.

How does Chaos play under the new updated rules? I seem to recall lots of psychic powers to buy, but that might have been something else...

Haven't a clue about the new rules.
I think i'll sell my 40k stuff (*sob* :( ) but i don't know if anyone would want it.

I've got all sorts of ****, demon prince of khorn, greater deamon of tzeench, terminators, marines, fabius bile, abbadon, kharn, noise marines, plague marines, berzerkers, flag bearers(is that what they're called?), bloodthirsters, bikes, etc. etc.

I don't even know if half of these are used in the new rules tbh.

Would it be worth posting this stuff for sale?

If they're either unpainted or painted half decently, there should be few problems getting rid of most of those. I'd probably get them but I'm committed to Necrons as my second army. Got me a total of 65 quid in vouchers for my 21st to spend at the local gamers shop, I'm well on my way now...

Alot of them are unpainted. I'll have a root around and see what exactly i have and i'll post a thread.
    Somebody will surely buy them.

3rd edition is a lot simpler but the rules about heavy weapons are a bit messed up and the psychic powers are non-existant, makes ya wish that you never bought that liberian model and the attempt to make up for that with minor psychic powers was pathetic having to pay for a dice roll is stupid if you get nothing on the roll you have just wasted some of your wargear allowance that could have been used on something useful. The vehicles are another bad thing. Anyways enough complaining its easyer to play and alot faster too I prefer it.

It goes a lot faster alright, can't argue with that, but changing psychic powers to either a type of armour or a gun to fired in the shooting phase loses an important part of the game.

You can always reroll the minor powers table, or just pick a nice one if you want.:D As long as it's cool with your opponent, what's to stop you?

Thats not much good in a tournament or playing someone with no tolerance for bending the rules (Dav).
