Trinity College.

I've got to fill out my CAO in the next few days, and I was thinking about doing Engineering in Trinity. The course looks pretty interesting, something I'd like to do (yeah I've read the thread about it :)). From what I've read it holds the edge over DCU's engineering course, and it's got a nice center-of-town location too.

HOWEVER, every time I've been at Trinity, I've got a bad feel off the place. It seemed quite cold, very imposing, and just generally intimidated the hell out of me. Also, according to most of the people I've talked to Trinity is a very.. posh.. college. I'd rather not end up in a course with a load of snobs (no offense to anyone at Trinity, I'm going on anecdotal evidence here, please do prove me wrong), or being stuck in a college that I really dont like.

So what is Trinity, and life as a student in Trinity, really like?

First off: trinity's not really as bad as it seems - but i definitely wouldn't have gone there.

If it was up to me i'd say come to ucd - it's got a really good atmosphere about most of the place most of the time.

Do you have any friends in Trinity? Maybe hang around there for a day or 2, go to a few lectures, check out the restaurant and of course that bar :)

Trinity just has that image of being full of snobs but it's not. I know quite a few people studying there and while none of them are knackers, they're certainly not toffs.

That degree is very good, and I remember a thread on here a while ago saying it was extremely tough so maybe you should bear that in mind rather than focusing in the college atmosphere. It's such a large college you're bound to find likeminded people there somewhere!

I thought the very same thing about Trinity before i actually went there. There aren't many colleges with as much history and as much reputation as Trinity ( or as many bloody tourists ) but it really is a great college once you get past all that bullshìt. And the posh, stuck up gits are vastly outnumbered by sound, down-to-earth people. I will offer you some advice though if you wish to avoid pretentious gits, stay away from "the Ramp" and a couple of the societies *cough* phil and hist *cough*. But seriously, the main thing you want to do is pick the right course for you. If you're happy with that, then everything else will just be a bonus. Oh and for one night of every year you get to pretend to be a posh git as well. It's called the Trinity Ball. I'd advise you to start saving from day one, it's an expensive night!

I can see why you might get those impressions of Trinity. It is a rather imposing place, and has a lot of history behind it. I really didn't know what to expect when I started here last year, but I can gladly say that I'm happy. Most important thing is to be happy in your course; everything after that sort of falls into place after a while. There are a fair percentage of toffs here, but generally they don't go out of their way to pi$$ you off (contrary to popular beliefs). I have no doubt that if you get in here (which hopefully you will) that you will make a lot of good friends.

Trinity is like UCD really. Both have a reputation for being full of snotty gob****es

Truth is they got that reputation from someplace but both are so big its gotta have sound people so it doesnt really matter eh

Don't know anything about Trinity but I go to DCU and if you think Trinity is cold then god forgive you if you go to DCU.

This is my fifth year in DCU now, and despite the great people, the college just ****s students over time and again. They've just had some major budget cuts last year and they re-structered my entire course (not engineering) without consulting us. I now have to do 2 years of a course that I wouldn't have signed up for.

Whatever about trinity college being bad, I don't think they'd do something like that.

Trinity gives common rooms to societies and seems to treat them with more respect. DCU on the other hand charges you for everything things and does just enough to keep you there. You have to pay € just to get your password chnaged for the PCs!

Having said all that, the students seem to band together in the face of some of the ****e, and it'll prepare you for the real world.

as kevin said, dcu suxs... well most of the people are nice, one or two good societies, but at every opportunity the college mess you about... all they care about is money.

too true, students aren't really treated as students, they are another source of continual income... Also come 5/6pm the college has no real life... Clubs and socs try their best but most people feck off home as there is very little to do... tho who could blame them.

The bar is way more expensive than any other SUs ive been in

Thats becuase it's not an SU bar. it's run by an external company

    Eurospar?

I know the bar is run by an external company but its not even that nice! i havent been in the bar since last october because id rather sit at home and drink there's more atmosphere in my sittin room than that place!

As regards the buttery selling cans its more the fact that it seems so wrong to be able to sit with cans in a bar kinda adds to the attraction.... easy to smuggle in yer own cans from the afformentioned Eurospar....

    Thats just my opinion...

Nothing beats smuggling & pouring cans of Dutch Gold inside the old student bar in ucd

thats cos the bar currently (well did, still think it does) have a huge debt, circa in the region of 100k ye olde irish pounds... so unless the bar pays off the debt, or the people running the bar want to fit out the bar, it's gonna look that way for a long time.

I didn't go to either trinity or ucd, (I went to Portobello, big No NO!) but it depends upon the type of person you are... Yes, Trinity is full of 'Trinity Heads' who can be really obnoxious, but generally its fine... Everyone usually sticks to their own, so if you are a 'head' then you will socialise with the 'heads'... If not, then you'll find your own... Trinity have a very unique social structure, good or bad is up to the individual...

UCD is much more laid back... Most of the people I know go into UCD to hang out even when they haev no lectures! I could not even immagine doing that where I went to college...

See where your mates are going... not saying follow the crowd, But its always good to start off with people you know...
