Braces...

Have a few questions on braces for anyone who ever had them done. Maybe theres even a dentist in the Boards crowd :)

Basically, I'm 17, and my bottom row of teeth is getting a bit crooked - particularly noticeable at the centre. I think the jaw simply has too many teeth, and new molars on the inside are pushing the teeth in the centre out of alignment. One tooth is bent in and upwards slightly, thats the most noticeable thing.

Its not too bad at the moment but definitely getting worse over time, I feel too self-conscious to open-mouth smile anymore :(

Does anyone know how much braces cost, whats involved in getting them 'done', how long you have to keep them in, etc.? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

since your 17 i'll assume your in 5th year or so, in that case it should be covered shouldnt it? or an i confused. if you get them done before your 18 your parents might have some kind of coverage from their work

im not acutally sure how much it costs but time definitely varies from person to person. i know thta my brother had his for a year and a hlaf and i had to have mine for 3 years.
also, you'll probably have to have some teeth taken out.

A huge concern... having gaping holes in my jaw wouldn't be great. If thats the case, how long does it take for the gap to close up? I assume the teeth grow closer together or something?

I actually have an overly full mouth of teeth, but luckily they have "staggered" in a generally regular fashion.

If they remove teeth they would do so from the middle / back of the row of 7/8 (on each side), generally out of sight. The teeth will then relax / migrate slightly. The big gap will reduce and smaller gaps will appear between other teeth, but they should be regular.

Make an appointment with your local Dentist for a consultation? I'm sure they can tell you all you need to know or at least advise you. Or search out the nearest Orthodontist to you and he/she WILL know everything as they are the people who do that kinda of thing.
If you get them done on the public list you could be waiting a number of years (something to do with a strike I think). And to get them done private it really does cost loads again it will varey on your own circumstances condition of your teeth. Last quote I've heard was about 3000e but who knows what it is.

I can't offer advice for getting braces as I didn't get them. The two factors were; the fact that I didn't want to go through such annoying months of cleaning and putting them in and taking them out palaver, (sp?) and the fact that I would be changing the very core of what I am and how I was made, who cares how people see you from the outside eh ;)

So now I have very very mangled looking teeth and wisdom teeth still waiting to push through, but on the yang side I feel happy as I am and not what people want me to be.

    Good luck with it.

Just go see a dentist. If you've too many teeth causing your teeth to get pushed out of position then they'll take out a few and give you braces for a while. I had 6 teeth taken out before i got braces, unpleasant. You'd probably get something like tram tracks and if you're lucky enough, an elastic band or two!

Get them sorted out now though, if you want to get braces at a later age you'll end up paying through your teeth. I had braces for two years, my teeth were very bad at the start but now they are grand. Well worth it tbh.

If your teeth are only slightly out of line they are usually reluctant to give you braces. Moving the teeth a small amount usually results in the teeth easily moving back to their original position after the braces are removed.

If your wisdom teeth are impacted withing the gum (bony impaction) then they will have to be removed. If your wisdom teeth actually have room to erupt then the jaw space is usually fine and teeth will not have to be extracted.

Best thing you can do is go see a dentist for a consult. If you only have one misligned row then you may only need braces on the top or bottom teeth.

Mine are costing 3,000 for one row. If my other row moves out of line it will cost an extra 600.

    .logic.

About the cost, shop around!! My brother and I both had braces on at about the same time 6 years ago. Mam took us to an orthodontist and he was charging £1,800 just for my brothers top brace. We thought it was the place to be cos there was a Playstation in the waiting room!! :p However, it was far too expensive.
We went to another dentist and he did my top and bottom braces and my brothers top brace for £2,000. No PS in the waiting room but he still did a great job for a lot les £££.

Unfortunately you will find very few concrete answers here because each case is very different, some arrange a consultation. Which is difficult to do in Dublin.

The time span varies from around (i know vague) 12 months with a brace and another 6 months with a retainer to 24 months with a brace and 12 months with a retainer.

Example of the differences a friend of mine had two teeth preety much knocked out. He had a brace only on his top teeth and had it for around a year.

I, on the other hand, have had a brace on my top teeth for almost a year, and will be fitted for the bottom brace in a few months. So I'm looking at least 18 months more.

The cost.. if you leave near the boarder then get it done in the north, if not then it is pretty expensive. €4000 for my treatment but that includes white braces which are pretty much invisible. If you want braces though dont let the cost deter you.

As Rolo said, costs/time vary from person to person.

I had/have very stubborn teeth, which refused to fall out, and I had to have 8 milk teeth removed to make way for the adult teeth behind them. This left my teeth a little out of alignment. Coupled with a genetic disposition for bug bunnyness and an unfortunate car accident where I cracked the roots of two adult incisors, I needed quite a bit of work.

I had train track style braces for 4 years, another two years with retainers. I'm now supposed to wear the retainers every night for life, but I've found that 3 concurrent nights per month keeps me kosher. The entire cost of my treatment was just over IEP£4000.

But you won't need even close to that. From the sounds of it, you could get away with just a retainer for a while. Traintracks work much faster than retainers, but your teeth may go back to their previous positions after a year or two. Retainers take longer, but the change is much more likely to be solid, and you can remove them for going out/scoring/etc etc.

Go see an orthodontist, he'll advise you on the best course of action, if any.

    :)

i always wanted braces when i was younger!

loads of my friends, including some family members have/had them. i think you can go on the public waiting list for braces, where they divide you into classes, of a, b c etc depending on how bad youre teeth are....at least it was like this when i was in school. but it doesnt sound like your teeth are so bad at the moment...i knew a girl who's teth were arseways and she was only on the second from the top(as in most needy) list and she got taken off it eventually.

going private is very expensive. i think my best friend's parents paid about 2 grand for her to get her braces (train tracks) when she was 14 (6 years ago). but you can shop around because some dentists can and will charge astronomical prices in comparison to others.

i have braces atm, i think they cost around 2k if u get them done privatly, or else u can stay on the list for the next 5 or 6 years.

[gettin mine off in 4 months :D]

I had similar problem with bottom set of teeth i.e over crowding

The Dentist I went to advised me to get braces , which I did and had them on for approx 12 months ... They also took out a tooth from bottom set...

It was a pain but in the end worth it ....

Some Girls dig blokes with braces too .. which was pleasantly surprising :)

My mother was an Orthodontist with the MWHB and I'm pretty sure you can get them done through the Health Boards fairly cheaply if not free depending on how crooked your teeth are. I'll ask her about it tonight and let you know.

I don't know where you are living but Maghnus O' Donnell (Correct Spelling?) at the Northbrook Clinic carried out work on both my sister's and my teeth. He is en excellent orhtodentist* and there's no bull****, if you don't need to have something done he will tell you. He also works out of Navan. My uncle who is a dentist recommended him. i don't know the phone number but they are in the phonebook, Northbrook Clinic , Northbrook Road, Dublin 6.

Check out the BUPA ireland and VHI websites to see if you are covered for Orthodental* treatment.

[troll] how about going and getting pierced together? i've been thinking, the next time the blood bank refuse my blood im going to get my nipple pierced (only i dont think any babies i might have in the future would appreciate the milk coming at them from different directions). but it might be a bit of a pain when i'm wearing my trademark tight tops and people can see the piercing. (that'd just take all the fun and shock out of flashing) so maybe ill just gonna settle on a plain old extra ear piercing. [/troll]

and now on topic.....well...i cant think of anything to say...

*waits for gordon to come along and batter her while promising she'll never do it again but merc's post was just too good to resist*

this thread has gone completely off topic.

why are the mods not moderating this?

why have the offending posts not been deleted.
i see no connection between orthadontistry and piercings.

do any of the mods still actually moderate this forum, or does Gordon just suck up to the females on this board?

Good point WWM, I don't know what I would have done without your sharp eyes and your good advice, thanks. If it wasn't for you I'd be lost in a sea of discontent.

I hope your questions were answered Lyconix, good luck if you do get braces.

    now, where are those ladies...
