Beastie Boys!? Dear god, you're hopeless.

    Ok, get:

    Army Of Darkness
    The Trilogy Of The Dead
    Ginger Snaps
    Brotherhood Of The Wolf
    Romper Stomper
    Excalibur
    Twelve Monkeys
    The Big Lebowski
    Leon
    Being John Malkovich

Ok, there should be something there that you dont have, so get it.
If not, here's my list of films I own on DVD:
    http://muppet.boards.ie/members/angelwhore/DVDs.txt

Most of them are brilliant, but there's a serious turkey in there.

err unless you get it cheap don't bother, any dvd extras? don't count on it... you get the film thats it...

People seem to be listing off their favourite films, totally oblivious to whether the DVD is actually worth buying.

Don't buy Life Of Brian Region 2 either. (totally ****e dvd transfer... no extras, go for the R1 Criterion if needs be).. Goodfellas is similar.

Decent DVDs (as in worth the money):
Holy Grail is an extremely good purchase, packed with extras... as is Spinal Tap, T2, Memento, Jaws, Close Encounters (in fact the majority of Spielberg films)... Raging Bull, Pi, Requiem For A Dream, all brill dvds as well.

HMV have a small free booklet available at the moment called "50 essential DVDs you should own". It'll cost you nada to pick it up. Some mag (Empire I assume) had a supplement in the last issue along the same lines.

If you liked the movies, I'd recommend the following (my list, not their's), based mostly on extras on the discs:

Shrek (the R1 special edition - has all the extras available on the new R2 but you don't have to pay for the soundtrack)
Back to the Future (preferably region 1)
Terminator 2 (the Ultimate edition, not the single disc cutdown-on-extras version)
    Fight Club
Toy Story 1&2 box set (get them while they're still out)
Beauty and the Beast collectors edition
    Usual Suspects
    Moulin Rouge
Great Escape (careful to get the newer special edition)
Die Hard trilogy (R1 is uncut - the UK DieHard 1&2 set and DHWAV are both cut and dubbed - annoying if like me you notice)
Godfather box set (now going cheap)
A Fish Called Wanda (new special edition (lots of features not on my old copy) just out)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (R2 seems to have all the extras available on the more expensive Criterion issue)
Life of Brian (wait for the new special edition out later in the year - should also have the Criterion extras)
The Day the Earth Stood still (out soonish (sometime this year at least))
Fellowship of the Ring extended edition
    Monsters Inc collectors edition
Seven (you'll pick it up cheap from play ATM)
This is Spinal Tap (nuff said)
Wicker Man (if it's your kind of thing - great package and very cheap now)

Adding a few things that you probably should just have:
Leon (international edition as opposed to the shorter version you can get here)
BBCs Pride and Prejudice (and maybe the old Greer Garson movie too)
Shawshank Redemption (though there maybe a special edition out this year that might solve the transfer problems on the old release)
Ferris Bueller (everyone should have one)
    LA Confidential
    Lawrence of Arabia
Walking with Dinosaurs (I never had the patience to watch it on the TV, great to have though)
Blues Brothers (extra footage (nice), going cheap if you're willing to take BB2000 as well)
Apocalypse Now redux (good luck if you wanted to find the older version anyway)
Goodfellas (the disc is a flipper, which has put me off getting it)
    Amadeus
Ealing Comedy box set (note to family: this is my ideal present this year)

    TV:
    Both Family Guy sets
    Both Goodness Gracious Me discs
    Father Ted set
    Fawlty Towers set
Blackadder set (you get extra stuff with the R1)

    Some foreigny movies:
    Jean de Florette
Manon de Sources (worth watching if only for Ms Beart)
    Lola Rennt
    Das Boot
    <poncy mode>Wo hu cang long</poncy mode>

(note to would-be robbers - I don't have all the above but they're all on my list of "must haves", not "I'd like")

    The Boondock Saints
    Battle Royal

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,683 ✭✭✭daveg

Be careful what version of Goodfellows you buy. The R1 version which I have is a flipper (you have to turn the disc over half way through the film).

    Cube
[/because i love plugging this little known gem]

Great movie to watch if you like sci-fi (or maths!). Plus it has a good commentary on it too that is worth a listen if you're interested in the technical side of movie making.

    The Adventures Of Baron Munchausen

If you're looking for a little known, but fantastic, breathtaking epic, look no further.

Also on the subject of Gilliam, get BRAZIL.

I was going to make a couple of points about Vampires being standard Carpenter fare, and him not having anything to do with Vampires 2 except being an "executive producer" (the most worthless title in showbiz).

    But I won't.

Got the Shawshank Redemption on Double sided DVD last week, watched it last night.
The 16:9 side picture quality was bloody awful. The worst i have seen on DVD.
In some of the darker scenes, the walls were actually moving.
On the Pan and scan side, the quality was grand. But alas I have a W/S tv. I feel cheated for 12.99.
