Home Insurance

I have a few friends who are either new tenants in houses or haev been renting for ages and this subject came up as part of a drunken discussion.

A while back a friend of mine was renting a place, and tried to get insurance on his personal property. He was sharing at the time and was told that he wouldnt be able to get insurance unless the other tenants had their own policy. This was basically because they were not the owners of the property in question.

My question is this, what kind of insurance should a tenant look for, to cover their own personal property should they be robbed, burnt out, etc. What type of insurance policy should a tenant in rented accomdation go for?

Any suggestions? It would also haev to be flexible enough so that the policy would be transferable should the tenant move places.

There are tenant policies available - though I'd say they're probably more expensive. Try ringing a few insurance brokers.

BTW this thread might migrate to Accomodation or Business&Finance depending on Monty

Try AIB. I seem to remember having a policy before when I was sharing. The other tenents will have to setup a policy as well (1 policy per household).

Were with AIB home insurance now and they are (in my opinion) the best on the market.

What you are looking for is "contents only" insurance (but consider do you want occupiers liability attached)? Not sure who does it. The insurance companies tend to be wary, in particular for smaller amounts and for multiple tenants.

OT slightly, but does anyone know of an Irish based site where it's possible to get Home Insurance quotes from different companies to make it easier to compare prices?
