Linux Installation Scenario advice

    OK heres the scenario:

Got Win98 PC with 20 gig HD, all one partition at the moment.

Would like to have dual boot Linuz/win2k machine & was thinking of:
    - install SuSe (can't remember why choose it now) over Win98 - 1st partition.
    - win2k on a 2nd partition.
    - smallish (5gig tops) third partition for backups, may not be necessary as can burn them instead.

Am i likely to have any problems installing Linux over a windows OS as i'd really like to have it as the first partition.

Any obvious dos 'n don'ts - any obvious flauxs?

    thanxs

You should really make two partitions for Linux (at least).

One for your files and a 200mb one for swap.

    [4.75gb part1] [250 part2] == Linux
    [N gb part 3] 2k

    [5gb ] Backup.

    mmm...

A machine with Win98 and a 20 Gig HDD doesn't sound like it's overly endowed with RAM.

Your swap partition (analogous to the pagefile in windows) should probably be ~ twice the size of your RAM if you're not that well endowed memory wise. Otherwise you can reduce the size to save space. Putting the swap partition nearer the middle of the drive data should also improve swap performance.

It would also be advisable to use FAT32 for your Win2k install as opposed to NTFS. NTFS does not yet have full stable write support under Linux, while FAT32 access was perfected long ago. Also NTFS only outstrips FAT32 on space efficiency after ~35Gigs so no wastage there.

With regard to partitioning you only have 4 primary partitions available on a HDD. With only 20 Gigs you shouldn't have any problems. You could put your Linux partitions in a single Logical partition thus using only one Primary. Windows will need a Primary to install.

Has actually no RAM in it at the moment as borrowed it for other windows machine. ;)
