Can you copy a dvd straight from a normal DVD drive to a dvd burner??
Or would you have to rip them to HD then copy??
or create a mpg then burn ??

Yes and No. A blank DVD holds 4.7 gigs.

Some DVD's that are under 4.7 GIGS (Single Layered) can be copied so that you get a duplicate of the DVD. In these cases an image can be created to your hard drive using freeware software called DVDDecrypter and then copied to a blank DVD.

Most DVD's nowadays are Dual Layered and therefore can potentially hold 4.7 x 2 GIGs. These can't be copied straight as blank DVD's can only hold 4.7 GIGs.

    There are 2 scenario's here.

    1. The DVD is dual layered but the movie itself is under 4.7 GIGs. The movie can be ripped to your hard drive, re-authored and then burnt to a blank DVD.

    2. The DVD is dual layered and the movie itself is over 4.7 GIGs (usually movies over 2 hours in length). Here you would need to rip the movie, re-encode it so that it's under 4.7 GIG's, re-author it and burn to blank DVD. Naturally, this can be very time consuming.

There's informative articles about these scenarios at www.digital-digest.com and www.vcdhelp.com

dvd drive to a dvd burner yes.. but why ? u could read with the dvd burner then copy on the fly.. basically pc makes an image (dependin of which software u use) and copys of off that ..
U could rip them which is what i do to the hd.. using dvd decyptor.. it makes an iso onto the hd.. from there u can keep it permantly or burn straight away.. or savin for future use.. the above one on the fly does not save that image ( depending on software..)

Tincool below i think didnt answer the question in a direct kind of way but has some good pointers on burnin dvdrs

If u wanna rip encode ure own dvdrs with menus etc still intact
try getting dvd x copy another neat program that does it all in one..

a other question about burning DVD's

if you burn a region 1 dvd to a blank dvd, will the new disk be encoded as a region one or will it be region free?

If u use nero it will stay region 1
if u use dvd decyptor it will strip all regions and if u want warnings about piracy and fbi ... etc ..

    Depends on prog
