does anyone know of any sites that have info on the quality of different brands of cdr discs?
i'm thinking of buying a load of cheap ass blanks & i wanted to be sure they're not going to peel after a few days or screw up while they're burning

Does brand quality really matter that much. I have used all kinda of CD media and i havent noticed the differeance in any of them. So now i just use generic brancd cdr`s!

I'd still recommend Verbatim DataLife Plus if you can find them. Have used 500+ of these and the only disks I've lost were due to Windows hanging. Also seem to have a much longer life than other stuff I've tried.

Even the shíttiest blanks will burn perfectly in most drives.

The problem sets in when they are left lying around for ages or get exposed to sunlight. This will kill off a lot of the poorer disks quite quickly.

I always buy decent branded disks.

The last load of blanks I bought were TraxData 40x. Good quality discs and they worked out at 30c a piece delivered which I'm perfectly happy paying for decent media.

    Bought from www.121cdr.co.uk

    Just bought a spindle of 100 cdr`s (48x) from pcsuperstore for E20.

They burn at 48X as well, seem grand, lifespan is prolly poor but hey

I find memorex pretty ****ty despite their good name. Yeah most cds will burn pefectly it's the lifespan is the problem. I remember getting cds before that I would burn in college, and would have to rush home with them before the data would degrade!! I remember the data actually degrading as I was copying the files to my hard drive. I would copy a file over, then try again and the file would be corrupt the second time round. That's an extreme case, but it is the typical problem. The fact that you don't find out until later makes testing a bitch :(

i heart verb data life +'s

i wont go back to generic's after using them
its the lifespan that seems to be an issue these days

speed and burn problems seem to sorted

I always use 48x Imation's or TDK's, and have never had a failed burn or a dead disc from possibly 1000 used.

however, the Freecom's that came with my drive burnt at a 12th or rated speed, and 6 out of the ten wouldn't burn.... thats BAD quality...

    thanks for the replys.
i was already a fan of verbatim cdr's, they always seem to turn out perfect psone backups, even at the highest speed of the burner.
think i'll go for a 50 pack of verbatim datalife from that 123cdr site, they're cheaper than the crappy ones i was thinking of buying.

    cheers

I've bought from these guys before, and highly recommend them. I usually go for the Datasafe Silver Premuim, which are dirt cheap, and highly reliable.

The problem with cheap cdrs in my experience is that the top, silver surface can chip easily, rendering the cd unreadable.

I think the actual manufacturer, rather than the brand matters most. Some verbatim discs, for example are made by very low quality manufacturers, whereas others are very good quality.
