Does any one have a ZyXel Prestige 645m modem?

I have one that I use to connect to a lovely D-Link wireless AP, which I use to share access out to my 3 comps.

Just from reading other peoples posts here they are getting ridicules pings of 20 - 40ms, when I am getting 80 – 120 (I am using Eircoms 1Mbit/512K ‘service’) .

So I had the bright idea of connecting the modem directly to my gaming computer (Yes I know, why am I trying to fix something that isn’t broken?!) to see if it boosts it any. But I am unable to get it to work.

There is no windows program, you have to use telnet to get into the modem and try and set it up that way. I set it up to use PPP and then set a username / password, but I can’t seem to get it to connect (how do I know if it’s connected.

    thanks in advance,
    Robert

your dlink probably supports a pppoe connection, and as such would make the conenction to the net, as the 645m can not be set up to make a pppoe conenction as it only support bridged pppoe connection i.e. a client machine or other device has to make the connection. If you can not get the modem to connect on your comp you probably do not have a pppoe client on it to allow it to connect. If you have an istream cd run that and you will be able to connect up using your client machine at that point

Yes, my D-link router has PPPoE support, but I wanted to connect it directly to my computer, see how much of a latency the router adds.

I only got the one CD, alls it contains is the modem readme files. There is no 'software' on it? So am I missing a CD? Does Eircom have one PPPoE client for All modems?

ye they use enthernet as the pppoe client and it is no modem specific it is just a general dialer, there is another one called raspppoe that you could download off the net, and use that to make a connection of your client machine

It might have nothing to do with your router. What games are you talking about? What servers are you playing on?

The people who have pings of 20-40 are on ntl, esat or wireless. Eircoms dsl suffers from above average latency as a result of eircom trying to make it available to as many homes as possible (yes i know that they fail everyones line test, but still thats the way it is).

Most people get pings of about 60-70 on irish servers using eircoms dsl. If its a good english server youll get the same. If its a bad english server or a european server then youll be up into 3 figures. Obviously american servers will give much higher again.

Also bear in mind that reported pings are from games like Half-life and quake3. Other games give higher pings (Tribes 2 for example gives me a ping of 120 vs 60 for CS)

At the moment I am playing MOH: AA and MOH: Spearhead. The lowest ping I can get would be around 80, but on the server where I play most, it hangs around the low 100's.

I called Eircom support today and was told that yes, they should have sent out a second CD to me with a PPPoE client on it. So have to wait for that to arrive before I can test it out.

Lol, even with adsl I bet I can't download it from the Eircom site!

    Download RASpppoe: http://user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~normanb/ .

It's a free PPPoE client for practically all versions of Windows and it's a really small download (153K).

It works really well, I've been using it on Win2k for the past while, just follow the instructions that come with it.

thanks for the info. Still haven't gotten the CD off Eircom and they said they posted it last Saturday!

    I'll use that one instead.
