Despite my mild mannered exterior I actually hold a (very very old) blue belt in Kenpo (no thats not a mis spelling).

I noticed a dojo on Leason street near where I work and I was wondering if anyone out there had gone there and could recommend it...

The dojo is downstairs near to the bridge on the left as you are facing the bridge (before the junction).

I'm thinking about getting fit again (the thought is tiring enough!).

    DeV.

DBC, I might do that, being an almuni and all :)

    Wonder how much it costs...

I was blue tip before I stopped, the grades get a lot tougher after green tip!

Got any details of when they train?

    DeV.

If I wanted to train in Trinity (want to take a look at Ju-Jitsu) do I have to be a student?

I did Wing Chun in there for a bit but it was mainly a Kenpo Dojo. Pretty good as far as I know, been around a good while, but I can't tell you much more than that.

DeVore, I trained in that place in Leeson Street for 2 years (got to green belt) before I stopped. I can highly recommend it, its quite small - but it's very well run, and we had some great instructors! The head instructor actually studied under Ed Parker, and really knows his stuff. Can't remember how much we paid, but it can't have been that much, or we wouldn't have been able to afford it!:ninja:

Hmm, any more info on this? I should be starting back at Shotokan in September, but I'd be interesting in trying a few Ken(/m)po classes as well to get a better idea of the differences between the styles.

I did it for a few months there, before I started this new job. I loved it - the place is great, the instructors are really sound - all good really. I think they are moving premises to westmoreland st in the near future - I plan to begin again there soon.

I'd definitely recommend doing kenpo, its very structured compared to some other martial arts (although this could be a bad thing depending on your point of veiw). There are a set list of techniques and forms and sets that you have to be able to do for each belt. There's sparring as well, but I never really got into that!:ninja:

    Hmmm,
    2 questions folks-
that Wing Chun place on Leeson st. do you know if they do kids (8 yr old) classes ?
    and
do you have to be a student or trinity grad for the cheepo trinity classes ?

    many thanks -

They didn't teach kids in the place itself when I was there, but they may now, I left it a couple of years ago. Its worthwhile going in and asking anyway, cos one of the instructors used to hold special classes for children in Ranelagh. I'd say they're still going now, but they'd be able to tell you for sure in the club

anybody can train in trinity during the summer months, provided you join the sports hall for the nominal fee of 80 eurons. (only 6 weeks left of summer, by trinity clocks). After that, unless you are a student or a member of ducac you will not be allowed to train. membership of ducac, is restricted, costs 100+ eurons per annum. They generally take trinity alumni ahead of others but they do make exceptions on a regular basis (ie, patronise them and say you want to join the great kenpo club or the like.) This should work. They like to have their egos stroked in the trinity sports dept

I dont think the kenpo club trains over the summer though but the shotokan club does.
