Well I was watching the 9 o'clock news last night about the striking bus/train drivers, when this Fine Gael guy Denis Naughton comes on saying how the bad ass government should lay off the poor bus/train drivers.

    Then it struck me.

    Fine Gael are completely useless.

Once they would've realised that reform of the public transport network was necessary and HAD TO AHEAD NO MATTER WHAT.

Now FG are trying to please all the people all the time.....no water meters, no post boxes at the end of the road, farmers protesting - you name it.......

In trying to please all the people all the time FG are pleasing no - one

So that just leaves labour to vote for to get our pathetic, spineless a*slicking government OUT

I agree with you about Fg.
They seem to be jumping on every bandwagon.

God help us if we had to rely on them to take unpoplular action, to remedy a situation.

The 2002 General Election marks a huge change in the political landscape and it also marks the end of Fine Gael as we use to know it. Before it we had the big two but after we only have the big ONE.

Fianna Fail and Fine Gael have had a cozy relationship for many decades. Each could rely upon each other for opposition - someone to rally the troops against (it's a Celtic v. Rangers thing). Now that we see that Fine Gael are in decline and are losing ground to the PD's, Greens and Indepandants, FF should be concerned.
Up to a few years ago you wouldn't ever hear FF TDs drifting away from the party line. Now it's common place. Nearly every week we hear some back bencher giving their 10 minutes worth of blah against Government policy. If we had a strong opposition this would not happen.

    FF should be concerned

The more independants and smaller partys mean - it will be harder to find an alternative government to FF.

Who will want to elect a rag bag government.

I think FF are right to break up CIE, to break up Aer Rianta & the the health boards - you would not get this with weak government.

I think FG are a mess. I can't seeEnda Kenny making much of an impact. I think FG need to merge with Labour.

I would not like to see SF or indepependants - holding an Irish government over a barrell.

I think Pat Rabbite has exactly that notion in mind, he'll just need to pick his moment.

When you say he has that in mind, I assume you mean, he means for his party to consume Fine Gael?

Can't see that happen, not with all those Liberals in Fine Gael.*

    *yes that was funny.

Thats right Typedef, I think Rabbitte sees little profit in scraping with the SP, SWP, SF, Greens, WP and assorted independants for the "hard-left" vote. Much juicier pickings in the "pissed-off middle Ireland" market I'd say.

Pat Rabbitte, leader of Sinn Fein, sorry, I mean the Workers Party, excuse me sorry, I mean Democratic Left, sugar how clumsy of me, of course I mean the Labour Party, joining with FG?!
Well if that happens then it is definitely the end for both parties (well obviously).
But then again maybe there isn't enough room in Irish politics for two center left parties. Maybe they should join up and get married. A new name to this FG labour party could be the "Liberal Irish Democratic Labour" party or LIDL ( http://www.lidl.de ) ;)

Surely the party philosophies of the two parties are far too different to even consider a merger. I always thought Fine Gael had there foot in the right-wing Christian Democrat camp whilst Labour were very much a moderate Leftist bunch. If Labour abandon the Socialist roots upon which were the foundation of the party to become a bunch of nay-sayers with Fine Gael then they'll have totally lost my support.

For the skepicts, the reason a merger might happen, not saying its
inevitiable, is simply that there's little point being in a large party
if its never going to be in power.

FG hav'nt a hope in hell for the forseeble future and Rabbitte is supposed to be as much anti-FF as he is socialist. The two parties shared power three times in the last 30 years, if even it was at times a bumpy ride. The two have enough in commen in certain areas these days, the old ideologies are largely gone.

A merger would shed members from both parties, but most will stay on board for the sake of POWER.

    Mike.
