I think you can only save filetypes that are associated with the apps you have installed.

So jpegs, text files and supported sound files should work. You can't save .sis and . jar files but you can install from them.

I think the list of types you can save grows depending on what apps you have installed.

What kind of files were you trying to send to your phone?

was trying to send a .sis file :P how do u send games to ur phone then ? koz im not paying 5/7 euro for em :P

Well I've received loads of .sis files by email. And 1 .jar which is java stuff.

The only thing I can think of is that you have an older 7650. Some ppl have said that they cant open .sis files from emails.

I have v4.39, what do you have?

Hi there, how are you mailing it to yourself? Is it using an e-mail account (POP/IMAP) you have set-up on the 7650 in the Messaging application, or are you accessing your mail using WAP/Vodafone Live! through the WAP Services?

I'm on software ver 3.12 and installing .sis and java files from e-mail received from an e-mail account set-up in Messaging has worked fine for me (although I usually do it over Bluetooth).

hi - you can type in *#0000# on the phone to tell your software version (it's unlinkey to be earlier than V3.12 though!).

not sure what your problem is if you are receiving email to the mailbox you have set up in Messaging... are you recieving the body of the email (without the attachemnt) or just no email at all (it might be a connection issue then - which operator are you with and are you bill-pay or pre-pay)?

here's how i get attachments from the email accounts i've set up on the 7650:

after checking for new mail in the Messaging application, a new email is denoted with a red dot beside a green postbox:

    scr0.jpg

selecting this mailbox you can see the new email(s), any with an attachment have a paper clip on the right hand side

    scr1.jpg

selecting the email you can then selecting Options and the options menu appears

    scr2.jpg

selecting Attachments displays the attachment(s) for that email

    scr3.jpg

selecting Options and you can Open or Send it on, depending on the type of attachement it will display it (picture / text), play it (sound) or install it (application: .sis or java)

(btw: ScreenShots taken with the freeware ScreenTaker from SymbianWare.)

hmm - ok haven't come across your problem before - can you get as far as the fourth screen shot down?

if the options button is there, by pressing the left navigation button does it display any menu like in the final screen shot, if so what does it have on it?

no i cant - there is no ATTATCHMENT option at all in the options menu.

one thing though - when i go to messages and the vodafone box is there it doesnt have my name beside it like it does on yours...cud this mean it is not set up proply ?

i'll set up a vodafone mail account on the phone and try it in a bit (am i right in following it's a Vodafone mail the account you are using?)
one thing though - when i go to messages and the vodafone box is there it doesnt have my name beside it like it does on yours

don't worry - that's my cryptic way of distinguishing between all the differnet email account i've setup on the phone :)

hi - been rebuilding my pc and other stuff so haven't had a chance to get back to you 'till now

just tried sending an email with an attachment (.sis and .jpg) to my @vodafone.ie address and received and detatched them (.sis -> installed and .jpg -> view and saved to images) on the 7650 with no worries

here are the mail settings i have for my @vodafone.ie email account if you want to check them against yours

To get to the e-mail account settings:
    Main Menu
    Select Messaging
(you should see Messaging main listing, or if you are in an email account already back out to the main listing)
    Select Options
    Scroll and Select Settings
    Scroll and Select E-mail
    Select Mailboxes
Scroll and Select the Vodafone email account

Mailbox name: Vodafone (or whatever you want to call it)
Access point in use: use ISP GRPS (isp.vodafone.ie) or HSCSD*
    Mail address: your_email_address@vodafone.ie
    Outgoing mail server: mail.vodafone.ie
Send message: During next connection or Immediately
Send copy to self: Yes or No
    Include Signaure: Yes or No
    Username: your_email_address@vodafone.ie
    Password: Your My Vodafone password
    Incoming mail server: pop.vodafone.ie
    Mailbox type: POP3
    Security: Off
    APOP secure login: Off

[* these are acces points configured in the phone's connection settings that allow you to connect over the full internet]

Once this was set it up, i opened the Vodafone mailbox and selected Options and from the menu, Retrieve email > New

It connected (over the access point chosen in the settings) and downloaded all the mail, selecting the email with the attachment it opened up and displayed the text, selecting Options the 4th item down was Attachements, selecting that opened the Attachement list. Highlighting the .sis attachement (automatic if only one) and selecting Options allowed me to Open it and follow the Installation steps.

I am puzzled (and i'm sure you're frustrated!) why your phone isn't displaying an Attachement option once it's open.

Can you log into www.vodafone.ie and check your Vodafone Mail online and check that the mail has an attachement there?

Is there another e-mail account you can set up and try?

DubWireless, wondering could you help? Any time i try retrieve my email i get the following "Connecting to mailbox vodafone" then followed by "GPRS: GPRS not available check network services" can you shed any light on this.

btw i have set up my own @vodafone.ie account, which is the account i'm trying to retrieve from which is fully functional when i'm actually connected to vodafone live.

dub YES i can log onto www.vodafone.ie and check my mail on my pc, for some reason i cannot access my mail through my mailbox like u have told me to - only way is to connect to net and then go to mail :P this must be the problem

when i try to retreive new mail in the mailbox in messaging it says "connecting to benny" and theres 2 cogs spining around....it never connects - i either time out or it says gprs not availible ....im gawna ring vidafone now - real anoying tbh.

ohh and btw i cannot use - Access point in use: use ISP GRPS (isp.vodafone.ie) or HSCSD*

because they dont appear on list - i have vodafone live! - Vodafone MMS and WAP home to choose from.

ohh one more thing - Dub try connect to ur mail through favourites
    > vodafone mail etc and log onto ur mail account - then see if u can download attatchments, that way i will know the prob is really acessing mail through messaging
    > mailbox rather than anything to do with attachments at all....if u know what i mean.

hi lads there are two ways of getting your @vodafone.ie mail on the 7650

    1) using the WAP (Services) Browser of the 7650 and connecting to Vodafone Live!
this is a text based service which allow you to use a text based interface to your mail account, you can't get attachments this way. It uses a WAP connection (the Live! access point)

    OR

    2) using the Messaging Application of the 7650 with a Mailbox
this is an email client which allows you to set up and connect to e-mail accounts, you can get attachements this way. It uses a ISP: Full Internet connection using the Vodafone ISP over GPRS or HSCSD (i.e. not WAP)

so to use an email Mailbox in the Messaging Application you need to connect to the ISP: Full Internet, this can be done using:

    A) the Vodafone GPRS ISP (isp.vodafone.ie) access point, this uses GPRS and you are charged by the amount of Kb you download (so if receiving/sending many attachements this will add up). It can be expensive as Vodafone GPRS charges are very high (compared with O2) - this was still for Bill Pay customers only (last time i checked). You get a max 40.2kbit/s connection but in reality a 30ish kbit/s conneciton is what it tops out at.

    OR

    B) the Vodafone High Speed Data (HSCSD) access point, this is a Dial-Up service and you are charged per minute, you can use the Vodafone Mobile ISP for an 087 to 087 call and connect up to 38.4kbit/s over ISDN V.110

Before you can do this you need to make sure you have these services enabled by Vodafone at their end - you would need to call their Data Support Team on 1850 287 000 and ask for: "GPRS ISP: isp.vodafone.ie access point to be enabled (this may not yet be available for pre-pay customers), and the High Speed Data Service HSCSD to be enabled"

they should be able to help with the settings or e-mail you out the instructions, but some of us here who have them running can list them out for you no worries if you have any problems (just make sure they are enabled on the vodafone end)

    HTH,
    BrianG
