What is the simplest method of tracking any visitors that come onto a site via an external banner or link?

    All suggestions very gratefully received.

    Cheers

Get the HTTP referrer header (the page that they came from or referred them, either using server side scripting (i.e. PHP, ASP, Perl, JSP, etc.) or recorded in the logs.

    PHP, ASP, CGI?

www.phpclasses.org has lots of stats stuff. Try google or altavista otherwise.

If you have a web stats program for your site, just look at the referral url's, which will tell you where most people came from.

If not, use an external counter, such as www.sitemeter.com .
