Student USIT USA Summer 2003 - Visa Question

Myself and some friends are heading over to San Franciso for the summer. We were in USIT today paying up the balance of what we owed when we were told that we might have to guarentee the US embassy that we have jobs before our visas are issued, we were also told we might have to travel up to dublin to attend an interview in the embassy before we get visas too.

Basically what i'm wondering is what proof do you need of employment?
If you show them a letter offering you a job etc on headed paper will that do? and most importantly
what do you think the chances are of them following up any information on the letter to verify what you've told them(i.e. ringing phone numbers etc)?

I went to USA for the summer of 2002 and there was nothing like that. and it was post 9/11. So all this is very new. i know on a J1 solo you always needed proof of a job but for the good 'ol classic one it was just feel as you go.
If this comes to pass itll take the fun out of the whole going to a new country with no job, nowhere to live etc........its exciting!!!!

And becareful with USIT..........you know the way they meant to be collecting you from the Airport and you have a place to stay........well thats not always the case. When i got into chicago they didnt meet us and when we made our way to the college campus where we were mean to stay they werent expecting us and wouldnt open up the residence halls for us. instead they gave me $40 and pointed me in the direction of the "el"!!!!! Id been travelling for 24hrs(b/c of the AirLingus strike, i had to go a round about route) and thats the last thing i needed!!!!!

Yea I know..i'd rather not have a job before i go out to be honest..that's all part of the buzz so to speak...all these new regulations are all only pie in the sky at the moment...so i'll just have to sit tight and see what happens.

I'm going on Co-op to boston this February and I've had to go and book an appointment with the embassy in Dublin to get my visa. I had to get a DS-109(not sure if that's correct name of form) to prove that I had a placement and also had to get a letter from college stating that I was coming back in September to finish my degree.

I went to the states last summer on my J2 visa. I went through sayit. I needed to send sayit proof of employment. I hadnt decided where to go in the states so using google I ran a search for 'wildwood new jersey job'. (Wildwood is a resort)
I found a theme park offering summer jobs so i applied online and 2 weeks later I received an offer in the post. I gave this letter to sayit. I never actually went to wildwood:D and I dont know why i needed the letter. Some J1'ers going through sayit didnt need one.
My mates were also offered a job in this theme park and gave the letter to sayit.

My advice - Do the same thing
