yeah I read this about 6 months ago (was linked in a slashdot story) ... very interesting, but with a better yagi antenna he might have got a higher throughput ... cringely got 15 - 16 kilometers out of his ...
It would be a lot more difficult to set this type of thing up in Ireland because of our atrocious weather. I have set up RF stuff and water did get into it and destroyed it ... but that was on a mountain, but I used every possible means to waterproof it .. denzo tape, silicone and the box was IP67 or 68 .. it lasted about a month

2 other dubwan guys and myself set up an 11mbit connection covering Doolin, clare. Sharing a net connect to a camping site, a community centre a mile up the road, a hostel somewhere off up the hill and another house a mile away. Took about two hours to set up.

Dubwan nodes from celbridge, lucan, saggart and tallaght are all connected together, with one link of at least 8km running at 5.5mbit perfectly stable.

Down in wexford, Bkehoe, has links that are longer than 8km, I think. With our legal power limits, you'd be doing very well to get a usable connect over 10 km unfortunately.

to be honest, your man is doing something very wrong to only have a 2mbit connection at that range. Perhaps it's his home made antenna or the fact he's using satellite cable (which is ment for 400mhz not 2.4 gig, and is 75ohm to boot)

9KM, within the legal limits, is my longest (into Co.Kilkenny) and it gets a stable 1MBit connection, sometimes 2. Would easily get 11MBit at over 20KM if we had U.S. style regulations ;).

Satellite cable is really lossy. Not sure of the exact numbers, but maybe 10 times more than LMR400?

Its possible to get licenceced to transmit at riduclas power in ireland. 802.11b sits in 2.4 Ghz and the Amature band is in part of the same frequency as 802.11b (all cannnels up to 6 AFAIK).... Amatures (with proper licences) are alowed transmit serious power....

Its a bit of a loop hole in the law AFAIK....

    :)
