I just bought a 2nd hand 19" monitor for my system. But it only switches on every other time I power up the pc. Basicaly when I switch on the pc the monitor doesent start so I have to switch of the pc with out shutting it down in windows and try again. And it always works the 2nd time.

Does switch off the pc at the power switch damage the hard disk?

And why does my monitor only start when it wants to?

Any help at all is appreciated

try checking the cables at the back of the pc. make sure the cables are in the right port (shows picture of monitor). reboot the machine and see if that works.

sounds strange, did you check that any of the pins in the monitor lead were buckled?

For an experiment, when you have the pc and monitor running try disconnecting the video lead and reconnecting it, does the monitor go off and come back on the moment you reconnect the lead? or only every second time?

It sounds like the monitor is not detecting the RGB input (from VGA cable) initially and then when the reboot occurs the monitor may have "heated up" sufficiently to detect it.

You could call it a "cold start" problem.

Try rebooting the machine and powering the monitor (maybe leaving it off for 5 mins) after running it for a while to see if the problem has disapeared.
