I am thinking about getting a Nokia 7650 but want to know a few things...

Do I need to get my Meteor SIM upgraded to work with a 7650? (I know MMS isnt on meteor yet)

Is there a data cable out for the 7650 that will allow pictures to be transfered? Can it be done by infa red?

    thanks in advance.

I believe it has infra red and bluetooth so you can transfer pictures easily to your PC.
If meteor don't support mms then you won't be able to use it, get a new sim card with o2 or vodafone. They are cheap (€20 roughly) and mms is free until march.

What about just using the meteor sim for calls and texts in the 7650 is that possible without getting an updated SIM?

Isnt it free with o2 and vodafone till the end of this month not March?

    Yes and yes.

You just won't be able to send picture messages with Meteor.

I'm not sure if GPRS is supported with Meteor, or if you need to have a special subscription.

If not, you'll have to fiddle a bit with the settings to give you wap and email via dial-up as opposed to via GPRS.

Meteor don't support GPRS or MMS so you won't be able to send pictures to other mobiles but you should be able send via wap to an email address.

The metoer sim card you have will support everyting meteor supports as metoer haven't really launched any network features since they launched.

You could buy an 086 or 087 prepay simcard for about €20 if you want to use the GPRS and MMS features of the 7650.

How do you intend buying the phone ? If you buy one make sure it is unlocked as most of them about are locked to either 086 or 087.

    V10 ;)

There's no GPRS service with Meteor (yet), Meteor offer the 7650 so they should be able to help you setting it up for WAP over a dial-up connection

The 7650 doesn't have a cable connection option - only Infrared or Bluetooth. Bluetooth can be more tricky to set up, if you do go down the Bluetooth route a bunch of us here have set it up so we can help you out if you need any help

and how would one go about getting a blue tooth connector?/ or even an IR??
    how much roughly?

and would there be a software suite to go with it etc

    Hi hussey

I'd just use Infrared with the laptop - although there are IR adapters for desktops (plug into a usb port - and come with an extension cable to reach the desk). One of the posters on here Brophy menitoned he was selling them - not sure what model / make / os support there were

For bluetooth you would need a bluetooth adapter - these mostly come as USB adapters or PC Cards. With the USB adapters giving the flexibility of working in a laptop or desktop. There are many for sale - the TDK USB adapter has been the most stable one I've used with multiple devices (Palm/PocketPCs/7650/T68i/R520m) - but there are cheaper alternatives that work (although you don't get the same level of vendor support - the tdksystems.com site is one of the best bluetooh vendors sites for support and info and their software revisions have added a lot of enhancement over the last year).

The_Scary_Man was able to get his Billington Adapter working folowing the instructions in this thread.

If you do go down the Bluetooth route check the adaper you are thinking of and we'll be able to let you know if any of us have had it working with that one.

The PC Suite that comes with the 7650 (but ensure you have the latest version downloads from the Nokia site) will operate over Infrared or Bluetooth - and you can manage the phone settings, images, application installs, and PIM (calender/contacts/tasks) sync and phone backup.

I'm probably going to buy one today. I need a new development phone that supports MMS (and preferably Java too) and I desperately need to retire my 7110.

However, I wouldn't mind be forewarned of any shortcomings, glitches of simple observations first, from anyone who has one.

Well alot of my issues are software version dependant i'm guessing, poor recycling of ram, frequent crashes(alot when comming back from screensaver to unlock screen),battery door cover getting looser by the day(have to 2 use 2 batteries due to bad batt life), the slot covering the sim card don't give me any greater confidence and i've only opened that about 4 times in total. and the fone is now closing with far too little effort, i.e. keypad sliding back up and such when trying to do something............

I asked around and the general consensus was 7110 all over again. So as much as I’d have liked to have Java and POP3 support, I decided against it and got a GX-1 instead (of which my only complaints are that the IRCom can’t talk to my Palm and there appears to be no direct way of transferring images to/from the device).

    [edit]Hated the GX-1. For good or I'll I exchanged it for a 7650 yesterday[/edit]
