i am have no widscreen tv and i was wondering what is the best setting so as not to have programs in widescreen with the two black bars top and bottom.

The 4:3 and 16:9 seem the same to me.

Set it to 4:3 and turn Letterbox OFF. 16:9 mode will make people in widescreen transmissions long and narrow and is really only intended for w/s tellys

If the T.V has an auto function just use that.

Although for recording a widescreen copy of a widescreen programme setting the box at 16:9 and squishing the image on your tv gives a better playback quality.

If all you ever want is 4:3 then set it at that in the box and leave it alone. It is worth noting that the UK terestrial channels format much of their own programming for 13:9 ratio, you can see this on analogue transmissions with a slight letterbox effect. This can be a problem when watching some programmes in 4:3 such as the news or other programmes with on screen text as the edges get cut off.
