I must be losing my bottle!

    Here's one for the books:

Name a decent text game you tried that maybe/maybe not be still around. Oh oh XP is not going to like this, is it?

    Well here's the ball rollin'

    1. ADOM (Remember this one? A good RPG game). Like the monster memory system in it. It changes all the time.

    2. Text games such as ASCII Invaders :):)http://www.textmodegames.com/download/index.html

    Or your mind;)
    "Go North"

An old man sits in front of a fire talking to himself. He hasn’t noticed you yet.
    What will you do?

    "Poke old man with stick"

You don't know how to do that.

    "Hit old man with stick"

You don't know how to do that.

*Now I remember why I hate text based games

Heh! Heh! But the almost nonsensical mazes were the worst thing about those text adventure games. Mazes nice yeah... a lot of mazes done over again and again... nope! 'Witness' was nice though... an intriuging crime solving mystery type.

The Hobbit on the C64. God I almost launched my freakin tape deck out the window thanks to that game. I swapped it with a mate for commando! what a dumb ass:)

Fancy testing your sanity? The Hobbit

By the way the above is emulated by CCS64 in the unlikely case none of you guys know:)

    LoGiE,

I'm trying out the Hobbit now (No! I missed that one) and I'll blame you if this finally flips me over into ga-ga land!

Not bad at all (in a light hearted way that I wished that I play that 20 years ago when I was momentarily bored). Sniff!

    FYI, I lasted 2 screens. Exited the hobbit hole and went east to the troll clearing. Waited. Arrrgh just to be eaten by Trolls. Btw I examined the chest on the first screen... and the interpreter says.... "you have examined the chest".... Yeees! Nothing in it though. Throrin and Gandalf were rather impatient though... looks like they wanted to go on some ridiculous un-hobbit-like adventure. Tsk! That's the last time I invite someone in for scone and tea. ;

    LoGiE,

For your Hobbit aid, may I present to you "How to get out my room" - AKA: The Hitchiker's Guide To The Guide. See the attachment. :)

Now right click on hobbit.d64 and go down to delete... :) If your crazy enough go to www.c64.com and grab yourself all the c64 text adventures under the sun! Just make sure theres a family member on standby with a straight jacket and a car to take you nearest asylum:D

Haha I was 11 or 12 when I played the Hitchhikers Guide, the pill was actually described as "an anelgesic", not "a pill". I had no clue what that was and it was days before I found out :) I never forgot though...

I remember taking my ZX Spectrum to Galway on holiday and trying to finish the text based game Valkyrie 17, anyone remember that? My favourite line was after you picked up a ringing phone a voice said "Ze red kipper flies at midnight"

Check out this page, especially the screenshots :)

the graphics in Tir Na Nog reflect all the advances in programming techniques that have occurred since Valhalla appeared!)
I am old enough to have read those reviews when they were current :)

Valkyrie 17... you'd reminded of another game that I have completely forgot about but like so many times... I can't remember the name. Tsk!

Kinda reminds me of the arcade game: "The Great Escape" (outta scope here I know!). That black and white 3D-ish isometric game where you try to break out of a German Concentration camp. Wish there was another game like that around. Valkyrie at least has elements of that.

Hmm... Colditz castle? A text adventure that doesn't have a rpg tang to it! Yes, that makes a refreshing change. Ever, dare I say it, complete it?

Can't remember, its likely I did with some help from a games magazine :)

i tried playing a lotr text game a couple of months ago, i think it was called return to krondor or something.
that was fun for all of 5 seconds, then i remebered just how crappy text based games are

Heh Heh! :) They can be damn right frustrating! But can be fun for trying to mapping. Remember to drop an item in each room before moving on since those mazes were weird! That works once the thief (tm) didn't take your item off the floor in the meantime. :D

Good for 'ole memory lane though:

Storytelling in Computer Games Past, Present and Future (UWEC Panel featuring Scott Adams)

I highly recommend downloading these Scott Adams interviews. He talks about 16K games versus today's blasters (or should I say Bloaters?) and about the good story-tellers of today: eg Deus Ex...
